The chutes increase access. It doesn't pressure those who have difficulty with steps to climb them and it doesn't exclude those with mobility aids. Credit: Alli...son Goldstein Reynolds (Orange background with white text. Before you dump your candy chutes, please realize that this Halloween became more accessible to kids with physical disabilities who can be challenged going up steps to your front door. Keep the chute. It just makes Halloween better.)

{image description Tweet from @appyjumpindaze Cancel the binary view of disability. ... Blind ppl might walk without a cane but need large text & other aids. Deaf/Hoh might use ASL but not all the time. One person may use live dictation, another read lips. Wheelchair users might walk some days. Disability is not binary. }

Im a quadriplegic, says Walter. I use a mouth stick and voice recognition software on my computer, which works great. When it came to my phone Siris grea...t, but its a love/hate relationship. Looking for a way to be more productive with his iPhone, Walter joined TELUS' Tech for Good Program in collaboration with Neil Squire. Through the program, customers with disabilities that require assistive technology can receive specialized assistance. The lessons were awesome! shares Walter. The voice control feature on the phone allows me to do a lot more things than I could before. Earlier, I had other people who were helping me access apps and that sort of thing. The biggest barrier would be frustration. Now theres no frustration anymore. Walters new skills have benefited his work tenfold. Without services like these, he adds, Guys like myself wont be as productive as they can be. Read Walter's story: https://www.neilsquire.ca/theres-no-frustration-anymore-sa/

Years ago, I had a teacher approach me regarding a student that was getting so frustrated with writing numbers incorrectly. As an Occupational Therapy Assistan...t ..I love problem solving. Here is a strategy that I made up and that I use quite often with children that have difficulty with writing numbers . .....and had a lot of success. The first pictures I use white boards, chalkboard, paper and washable markers. I then scaled it down for paper and pencil with using a spacer. Now someone asked me tonight How do you do it with lefties....(the whole reason I didnt post this earlier is I didnt have a clue) I called my daughter Kyndall downstairs and she said simple just flip your hand over!!! Or maybe cut out a cardboard hand for right hand to hold. Left handed is last videos. UPDATE!!!!!!!!! UPDATE!!!!!!! I have several comments that the left hand would never work. My daughter thought of the idea when I asked her how would she do it (left handed- ADHD OFF Meds)and did it in the video. I would say try any left handed child in sand or flour or whipping cream on the table and write with only index to take out fine motor component and learn and feel formation. OR. ....SKIP flipping the hand and use cut out I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ANY LEFT HANDED IDEAS.....it was the whole reason I didnt post it for years.!!!!!!! See more

Family and support teams are essential partners in care. They know and love the person in the hospital and are not "visitors". In Ariis' case, her support team could have communicated with her and provided critical info, decision-making support and comfort. #NotJustaVisitor

In her conference today, Dr. Bonnie Henry addressed the question of people with disabilities being permitted to have family or the support team in hospital with... them. This is very good progress! "In terms of people with disabilities who are having challenges in communicating in particular, I know that this is something that has been a concern for many people. There are exceptions to the restrictions that we have in both long-term care and in the hospitals to ensure that people who have these extra needs around being able to verbalize or have other issues in not being able to communicate effectively or hear. We do believe that there is accommodation being made. My expectation is that there is accommodation being made. It can be very difficult sometimes and of course people need to wear appropriate personal protective equipment in that setting so that both the healthcare providers and the patients and the support people are protected." - Dr. Bonnie Henry, April 23, 2020
