Since it is now officially September 30th, USC Accessibility would like to take a moment to pause and reflect. Today marks the first annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today we honour the lost children, and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. Together, we have an opportunity to work ...towards a better society, this begins with all of us. We must do everything in our power to bring awareness to the wrongdoings of the Canadian government. We acknowledge the mistreatment and abuse that occurred in residential schools across Canada from 1831-1998. Today we acknowledge all who are impacted by residential schools and seek to better understand the intergenerational trauma that these schools caused. We stand with all Indigenous people today and we hear you. We acknowledge the past and strive for a better future for all Indigenous people. Today we can be Indigenous advocates through various ways. We can observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by listening to stories of residential school survivors, wearing orange shirts in solidarity, donating to Indigenous led causes, and choosing to personally fight for one or more of the 94 calls to action. Today we stand together Mustangs, and proudly support our Indigenous peers, faculty, and community members. https://www2.gov.bc.ca//abori/calls_to_action_english2.pdf

Communication brings people together and is of great importance to us all. Today we celebrate Sign Language and all it has to offer our society. This day emphasizes the principle of "nothing about us without us" in terms of working with Deaf communities. Check out some of the best practices here! http://ow.ly/YA7Q50GfchS

First introduced in 1991, 14 November marks World Diabetes Day. This date was chosen as it marks the birthday of one of the co-discoverers of Insulin, Canadian Scientist Sir Frederick G Banting. Diabetes is a major health and development challenge of our current century, with 3.0 million individuals in Canada alone (8.1% of the population) having the disease. Those who have diabetes cannot either produce insulin or properly use the insulin the body produces, which unfortunately leads to many health problems. Every year, the World Diabetes Day campaign has a theme, with the 2020 theme being The Nurse and Diabetes. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about the disease, with a focus this year on promoting the role nurses play in its prevention and management.

We remember. On November 11, we pause to reflect, remember, and honour the sacrifices made by those who served - and who continue to serve our country. We give thanks to our past, present, and future freedoms.
