As always, Dylan Johnson rolls out another concise summary of actual scientific research on the topic. Turns out there have been studies that have looked at this from a number of different angles. Not surprisingly, it seems that listening to music you don't like is counterproductive to both performance and perceived exertion. So, to those who came to any of our coached bike workouts and didn't love my playlist, I apologize and I applaud you for sticking with it. Zoom workouts might be the best solution: you play your music, I play mine, we all win with stronger performance.
This video addresses block periodization training but for a single sport only. Still, the physiological principles should still apply. If/When, I find info on block periodization more specific to triathlon, I will also share it. It bears repeating, and this is addressed in the video, recovery is a key to the success of block periodization training. Really, though, any training protocol requires proper recovery, right?
Not really new information but definitely worth re-visiting if you are looking for motivation to get you back into a gym or, at least, into a strength training routine.
