Entablature restoration project in a mature neighbourhood in Ottawa after new exterior door installation. We added a storm door with hideaway screen from Larson doors afterwords. I love this storm door as the screen is at the top so it works great for families with pets so the screen isn’t destroyed. When done, push it up and the screen rolls up! Genius. These projects are always fun for carpenters as it really displays skill. Exterior trim is far different in terms of handling expansion contraction of all the joints than interior trim due to the lack of conditioned space. Before and after photos displayed.

Ok! New year’s resolution before the new year starts! This site doesn’t get updated like ever and it’s a big regret of mine so here is the first in hopefully many updates that I make! First up, here is an older kitchen we completed in a coachhouse renovation for a client. Highlights include exposed stone walls, under cabinet lighting, raw exposed materials such as untreated tongue and groove pine and custom designed crown moulding detail.

I wanted to post this as a smaller renovation to consider to update and modernize your home. New doors, trim and door hardware were added to this mid 50s house with a fresh sprayed coat of urethane semi gloss paint for better cleanability. Add in a fresh coat of paint on the ceiling and walls after stripping the old wallpaper and sealing over it with an oil based primer and we updated this upstairs by almost 70 years.

These clients have already posted a thank you but I thought I would share a little of the work we did for them. After an unfortunate episode where fire destroyed a large portion of their home, we had the pleasure of working with them to put everything back together. Here are some shots of the house after we put it all back together. I think In the end we can call it a success!

I wanted to start out with a special job that doesn't come around everyday. Century old homes offer character that isn't offered in a new home. The exposed stone and 10' ceilings allowed us to put some kitchen details into this renovation that just wouldn't be proportionate in most kitchens. Double stacked upper cabinets give this kitchen a grandeur feeling while the glass keeps it feeling light and not overbearing. The feature of this kitchen is most definitely the chimney s...tyled hood vent and double crown mouldings. The first picture shows what was there before along with a few angles of the finished product. This kitchen was a delight to design and install, and the homeowners are very happy, so I consider that a success! Please forgive the amateur photography, it's a work in progress!

Our apologies for the absence the last little while, we have been overrun with requests for work done, and been busy out there swinging a hammer. Over the coming month or so, I will updating some completed projects with some blurbs about challenges and interesting things we came across during renovations. Hopefully we haven't lost all your interests!

Using cheaper materials for upgrades has become an increasingly popular trend lately. This young woman was looking for something a little different for a suburb...an bathroom so we treated some slats of wood from a skid and made a gorgeous frame for your basic mirror to add some character to this industrial style bathroom. A smaller kitchen we did in the past with a lot of storage! Those of us who all need storage who don't live in mansions can gain some nice inspiration from the pantry and storage continuation into the dining room. Great way to make a smaller footprint kitchen feel huge (with the benefit of increased storage which is never a bad thing!)

Happy New Year everyone! We hope everyone had a safe and restful holiday season. Here at Ace Renovations, we are looking forward to another year of challenges, and great projects to share with each and every one of you. Lately we've been doing a lot of service work so we don't have any pictures with design inspiration for you to look at so we are going to delve into the vault and share some pictures from the past. Enjoy!

One of my favourite kitchens we’ve ever tackled. Those who know me know my obsession with Italian inspired design. The more detail, mouldings and rich colours the more I gravitate to it. With the two tone vanilla glaze and intense detail, this will always be up there on my list of favourites. How nice would gathering around his 72 x 95 island be?

Two bathrooms we just recently completed. Curbless shower entries and hybrid wet rooms for a not for profit agency that houses adults with disabilities. The challenge on these jobs was that the clients are showered by working Personal Support Workers so while we need the shower to be conventional in some respects, other considerations like locations of the controls and locations of water dispensers is paramount to after construction functionality and usability. A little tile style and flair for comfort and these clients are ready to enjoy their showers for the next 25 years!

Another treat for us to build. After the previous owners closed in the breeze way from house to garage and didn’t insulate it properly we were tasked with keeping it warm and making it look great. We ripped it back to the studs, insulated, vapour and air sealed for energy efficiency and created an awesome country style mud room for our customer to enjoy! It’s their most used entrance way and has a clear path to the back door where their pool sits. We used Aqua Defense waterpr...oofing membrane that is commonly used to waterproof behind tile so that the luxury vinyl plank could be glued on top and water would never be an issue again. We love luxury vinyl plank flooring and suggest it constantly to our clients. Pet friendly, not affected by water, reasonably priced, and wood grain patterns give it a very warm feeling like a hardwood!

This was an older job done by our team with quite a change. Due to an extra member of the family, these clients needed to create extra living space. We took an old storage room, and turned it into an ensuite bathroom as the owners moved their bedroom downstairs to allow the children more "comfort." The change from beginning to end was quite drastic, and for those of you who like darker finishes, this will appeal even more!
