Never can repeat this information too often on what is ok to flush down the toilet or sink!! Everything that goes down your drains ends up in your septic system. What goes down the drain affects how well your septic system works. Your septic system is not a trash can. An easy rule of thumb: Do not flush anything besides human waste and toilet paper. Never flush: Cooking grease or oil... Non-flushable wipes, such as baby wipes or other wet wipes Photographic solutions Feminine hygiene products Condoms Dental floss Diapers Cigarette butts Coffee grounds Cat litter Paper towels Pharmaceuticals Household chemicals like gasoline, oil, pesticides, antifreeze, and paint or paint thinners See more

TRASH TANKS This is info from the US pumper magazine: Newer systems have what we call a "trash tank" an aerator, a pump and discharges into a field. What is a "trash tank"?... "There are potentially two or three compartments that will need cleaning at some point. The first compartment or pretreatment tank is generally referred to as the trash tank because it settles out materials that microorganisms cannot degrade. Pretreatment tanks are designed to store solids and perform limited biological treatment. Pumping out the trash tank is mandatory to remove and dispose of these solids before they discharge from the tank. Initially after startup, check solids depth at six-month intervals to determine the amount of solids accumulating in the tank. Typically, this tank will need cleaning on a schedule similar to a septic tank pumping interval of every two to three years, but this is highly dependent on the household practices. The goal is to maintain scum and sludge accumulations to less than 1/3 depth of the liquid level. "

Sometimes we get a call about a week later after pumping and they happen to look in the tank and say" My tank is full allready". It is perfectly normal and correct to be 1 foot from the top of the tank. Your septic tank will hold liquid in order for the separation of solids and liquid to happen. Only the liquid (or grey water) should flow out to the leach field pipes. For further information please call the office at (604) 534-8242 or shoot us an email.

A frequent question is how do I know when to pump the septic tank? There are a few different signs that can help you know that it’s time to pump your septic tank. The most obvious is simply time, as it’s been 3-5 years. However, if you’re not sure of the time frame, here are a few signs that you should pump your tank. Pooling water in your yard and extra lush grass near your septic system are signs that your tank has reached capacity and has begun to leak. Odors coming from your yard and the drains in your home can indicate sewage backups, which is another sign that your septic tank is near full. Lastly, if your drains begin to drain slowly and are not clogged, it’s a sign that your septic system is being overworked because it is near capacity.

Great article about septic tank maintenance copies from pumper.com: If a septic tank is operating properly, solids are retained and take up increasingly more volume. Eventually, they must be removed. If there is little accumulation of solids, either the household has limited usage or there is a problem causing solids to pass through the tank. When there is little clear zone left, proper solids separation will no longer occur, detention time for settling is further reduced, an...Continue reading

Have you heard about the baffle in a septic tank? According to pumper.com "A septic tank should have baffles at both the inlet and outlet. The purpose of the inlet baffle is a): to direct flow from the house sewer downward into the tank to create a longer detention time for the sewage to allow settling of solids, and b) to keep the floating scum layer from plugging the inlet pipe. The outlet baffle also has two functions: to prevent floating scum or debris from passing to the drainfield, and to ensure the effluent moving to the next part of the system is from the clear effluent zone. There are also effluent screens to keep large floating solids or debris from passing downstream." Ace will inspect these baffles during regular cleaning and inspection of septic systems. Call (604)534-8242 to book your cleaning today.

Lets talk about heavy rains. Does heavy rain cause septic backup? Definitely because it becomes overwhelmed with water!! This can cause septic waste to back up in the system and sometimes into homes. ... Septic backups can be also be caused by field lines being plugged by sludge overflowing into lines, tree roots, breaks in pipes or saturated ground.
