Hot Rod Fast Fact - Chevrolet Viewed upside-down, the 348/409 valve cover resembles the letter W. But thats not where the W-Series 348/409 engine got its name. Following this logic, the engine should be known as the M-Series, right? The designation actually stems from the development codes assigned to a trio of experimental engine types, the W, X, and Y. The best engine joined the small-block for use in larger vehicles. I dont have specific details on why the W engine beat out the X and Y, but that is where it got its name.

Hot Rod Fast Fact - Ford Did the mighty 1964 427 Fairlane Thunderbolt Super Stock really have a single exhaust system? Yes. To save weight (versus a dual-exhaust arrangement) while meeting the NHRA mandate for street-legal exhaust systems on stock class entries, Ford had Dearborn Steel Tubing fit each T-Bolt with a solitary 1-inch pipe running under the passenger side of the floorpan. A stock six-cylinder Fairlane straight-through muffler was positioned in the standard location beside the gas tank. In race service, the header caps were unbolted, allowing the 427 high-riser to breathe freely.
