International Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day is coming up on Friday, October 16! DLD is a hidden but common language disorder that affects children and persists into adulthood. People with DLD have difficulties talking and/or understanding language, which impacts literacy, learning, friendships, and emotional well-being. DLD affects approximately 1 in 14 children - that's roughly two children in a classroom. Awareness of DLD in the public is low, but here... is how you can help spread the word: 1. On October 16, watch for the Edmonton High Level Bridge and the Calgary Tower to be lit up in purple and yellow for DLD Awareness Day. Take a picture of yourself with the lights and post to social media. 2. Watch this video to learn more about DLD and DLD Awareness Day - then spread it through your network! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDPrXQPTnlE 3. Visit RADLD.org to learn more about DLD, its signs and its impacts. This fact sheet provides a nice summary: https://radld.org//uplo/2019/04/DLD-Fact-Sheet-English.pdf 4. Share the #DLDSeeMe logo, and visit RADLD for more digital resources. https://radld.org/dld-awareness-day/resources-media-ideas/ 5. Add the DLD awareness frame to your profile picture (just click on your profile picture, select update profile picture, add frame, and search 'DLD awareness Day'). Help spread the word on October 16!
