Have you seen The Guide and Protector by Jae Sterling, up close yet? The mural is inspired by the story of John Ware, Alberta’s legendary Black cowboy.

We’ll be posting about our Response Model for Hate Incidents in Alberta, which launched in July, over the next couple of days. Link to the model here: http://coalitionscreatingequity.ca//Hate-Incident-BookJuly The Response Model for Hate Incidents in Alberta is an initiative being led by the Alberta Coalitions Creating Equity (CCE) and funded by the Alberta Human Rights Education and Multiculturalism Fund. The five municipalities of the CCE (Wood Buffalo, Edmonton, Red Deer..., Calgary, and Lethbridge) and their surrounding areas worked together to develop a mechanism to provide service providers with tools and guidelines to effectively respond to incidents of hate. This model was informed by a provincial-wide survey and various regional focus groups and community engagements.

You’re invited to Calgary Cinematheque's season premiere screening of TOUKI BOUKI (1973) on October 8th at the Globe Cinema (617 8 Ave SW). In support of anti-racism initiatives in Calgary’s art communities, half of the proceeds from this screening will be going to ActionDignity’s B.L.A.C.K. Project. Tickets here: http://calgarycinema.org Directed by Senegalese filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambety, this Senegalese road movie follows Mory and Anta, a rebellious young couple who, fed... up with their homeland, embark on a trip to escape to Paris. Released following Senegal’s return to independence in the 1960s, TOUKI BOUKI deftly captures a moment of post-colonial tension between the familiar traditions of its characters’ African homeland and the aspirational promise of a modernized France. Please note the following content advisories: The film contains brief but graphic shots of goat and cow slaughter at least four times throughout the film. There is also an instance of brief nudity, following by a mostly off-screen sex scene. The sounds of the act can be heard while shots of the ocean play. A huge thank you to Calgary Cinamatheque for this partnership and their commitment to anti-racism initiatives. We hope to see you there!

Today was special for a number of reasons: 1) Our staff and community brokers were able to get together for the first time since leaving the office in March! So many birthdays, births, and milestones to celebrate! 2) We were able to meet Phil & Seb from @philandseb. They have been raising funds for our organization for a couple of months now, today they presented us with a cheque worth $6,845. Of that sum, $5840 came from @PhilandSeb coffee sales & $1005 came from @hoopladonu...ts sales! We are blown away consistently by the outpouring of love from the community. Thank you to everyone who bought a donut or coffee and thank you to @philandseb for choosing us to donate to.

Every child matters and every child is worthy of dignity and respect. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. #OrangeShirtDay is a day to recognize the harm done by residential schools to Indigenous communities and as a way to honour all those impacted. The orange shirt refers to a new shirt that Phyllis Webstad was given by her grandmother for her first day of school at St.Joseph’s Mission Residential School in colonial British Colombia. When she arrived to school, her ...clothes were taken away and never returned. We stand with survivors of residential schools and are committed to a reconciliation that is Indigenous led.
