Neck Pain or Headaches? The Sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) may be a contributing factor. The SCM is a paired muscle spanning diagonally across the side of the neck. It is one of the largest and most superficial cervical muscles. The SCM has 3 primary actions: neck flexion, opposite side neck rotation, and side bending of the neck to the same side.... This muscle tends to be overactive in many people and is commonly recruited to help stabilize the neck/head when an individual adopts poor head/neck postures and positions (e.g. forward head posture). Along with the Scalene muscles, the SCM is also an accessory muscle used in the mechanics of breathing. Therefore, improper breathing patterns and habits could also cause this muscle to be overworked leading to increased muscle tension in the SCM and the development of Myofascial Trigger Points (MFTPs). SCM MFTPs can cause a variety of symptoms including headache, face pain, balance problems, visual disturbances, ear & sinus symptoms, and more. SCM tension and MFTPs can also contribute to muscle tension and MFTPs in muscles surrounding the Jaw (TMJ). Additionally, tension in the SCM can cause biomechanical problems in the cervical spine. The SCM is innervated by the Accessory Nerve (Cranial Nerve XI) which exits the skull by way of the jugular foramen at the base of the skull. Compression or entrapment of the Accessory Nerve as it passes through the jugular foramen can lead to hypertension in the SCM. Therefore, it is also very important to investigate and address the structures located in this area in order to ensure the nerve has enough space to travel and work properly. Mindfulness on Sunday: The focus of my mindfulness practice this evening was on failure. As failure is a common human experience, I wanted to share with you all the wisdom of the closing message of tonights meditation. ...We have all experienced failure in some way, large or small. From a young age we learn that success is to be pursued, revered, and celebrated. Failure, on the other hand, is deemed unacceptable and we are never really taught how to move through failure, ...something we all face. Since we cant avoid failure, we want to learn to fail skillfully. ...When we experience a significant failure, like when a relationship falls apart, a business venture fails, or an academic program doesnt work out, its often difficult to separate the failure from who we are. When we have a success, we identify with that success. It means we are victorious, talented, or important. But, when we have a failure, we label ourselves as less than. We lose our confidence. We feel ashamed. We are the same person we were before, but in an instant, a defeat has altered our sense of self. We allow our failures to define us. Its no longer that we simply had a failure, we make it mean that we are a failure. Our experience of failure is not the problem. The problem is our view of it, and our response to it...While it is natural to feel disappointment, we dont have to buy into our storyline and let a failure be a measure of our self worth. We can reframe our experience recognizing that a failure is proof that we courageously tried, and could that be enough? Might it be possible to even view our failure as a victory, because we took a risk, or learned something new? Just because you have a failure, it does not mean that you are a failure...In times of defeat...be gentle with yourself and forgiving...View each failure as a passing event without giving it so much meaning. When we respond to disappointments with non-judgement and compassion, we can pick ourselves up and move forward. We can celebrate our effort, not just the outcome.
