One of the BEST parts of our acupuncture team is the fact that we get to LEARN advanced acupuncture techniques together! This weekend @drfradsham_acupuncture took us through a distal acupuncture theory course. (Side note: In addition to his practice at AC, Dr. Allan also teaches at the Canadian College of TCM & Acupuncture!) We got to see those teaching skills in action this weekend with a mini course exclusively for the AC team. Thanks Dr. Allan for sharing that brilliant with us!

Oxytocin is often referred to as the love hormone And what do we LOVE about this love hormone? The release of oxytocin supports healing and repair, manages pain response and plays a key role in reproduction. Modern research has shown that acupuncture supports the release and modulation of oxytocin, which can bring on a surge of positive emotion (and explains that happy post-acu glow we see in our patients!) ... So here's a little shout out to the hormone, oxytocin, this valentines day! See more

Season it! Sumer ASPARAGUS Thermal nature: Slightly warming | Flavour: bitter and mildly pungent Benefits: As a natural diuretic, asparagus helps flush the body of excess fluids and even excess salts and this is one of the reasons it is beneficial for helping with edema. Remember, as always dont overdo any one particular food and in particular if you have kidney inflammation you should limit your intake of asparagus even though it is naturally beneficial to the kidneys. Asparagus helps our vascular system by helping cleanse the arteries of cholesterol and is helpful with hypertension. Consider including asparagus into your diet choices not only for its delicious taste but also for the health benefits it can offer you.

Chinese medicine looks at pain in many different ways. One common type of pain is considered Bi syndrome or what would more commonly be understood in western terms as rheumatological symptoms. Stiffness, pain with movement, joint swelling etc. The different symptoms are assessed and then categorized into a pattern syndrome and treatment protocols are created based on these insights. There really arent names for diseases in Chinese medicine, disease classifications are mor...e western-based so to really understand an illness presentation in Chinese medicine terms you have to look at all the signs and symptoms that are being expressed through the body on the day of treatment. The goal is to create change in the body so you are regularly assessed at your ongoing appointments to determine how the pattern is evolving and what the next best steps are for continued treatment success. For a deeper understanding of how your specific pain condition is presenting, talk to your practitioner. Book with one of our practitioners today. https://acucollective.janeapp.com

Chiropractic & Acupuncture - like peanut butter & jam! These two treatment approaches are very complimentary to one another. That's why we've teamed up with Curo Chiropractic to offer a special rate for Initial appointments at both clinics. Curo patients receive Initial Acupuncture for $85 (savings of $40) ... Acupuncture Collective patients receive Initial Chiropractic Consult & Exam for $99 (savings of $66) In the words of Dr. Allan Fradsham, Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine: "Curo is amazing, we are so happy to have them in our healing family. I am so grateful to be able to send my patients to people I trust without reservation. My patients are very important to me. They have given me a huge amount of trust and I take that very seriously. Until I met Dr Sohan and Dr Keith I didnt have a chiropractor that I was willing to refer to. They have made a big difference in my patients lives. I trust them to adjust my family. I wouldnt let just anyone adjust my children. Without question they are the best." Season it! Summer CUCUMBER Have you heard the phrase cool as a cucumber? Are you starting to sense a theme here? Thats right the summer food selections are foods that generally have a cooling nature and naturally provide large quantities of water. Thermal nature: cool | Properties: sweet, aromatic... Benefits: Cucumber has that natural cooling property again and cucumber juice can also be used topically to help with eczema and inflamed skin conditions, did I mention sunburn. I actually find it quite relieving to rub the inside of a cucumber rind on a mosquito bite, it just takes some of the annoyance away from the sensation. Therapeutically, the mighty cucumber is a heavy hitter cooling heat from the stomach it helps relieve heartburn, ulcers, bleeding gums, bad breath. Its a powerful natural diuretic and aids in swelling conditions like edema and gout, heat conditions of the lower abdomen like kidney infections, bladder infections and hot urination. And yes, ladieshot flashes too. The list goes on. If its hot, the cool cucumber is your friend. #acupuncture #acupuncturerocks #acupuncturelife #acupunctureheals #tcm #tcmlivingwell #chinesemedicine #yycacupuncture #calgaryacupuncture #alternativemedicine #complimentarymedicine #naturalhealth #naturalhealthsolutions #yyc #meetmeon17th #calgary #yyclocal #yycsmallbusiness #17avecalgary #yycliving #yyclife #acupuncturecollective #seasonitsummercucumber #tcmfoodcucumber #cucumber

The Journal of NeuroPsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences These objective findings are consistent with clinical reports of acupuncture's relaxant effects. Acupuncture treatment may be of value for some categories of anxious patients with insomnia. The incidence of insomnia is estimated to be 35% to 40% of the adult population. It currently affects more than 60 million Americans, and this figure is expected to grow to 100 million by the middle of the 21st century. The defining... characteristic of insomnia in the context of anxiety is a pattern of multiple arousals from sleep. Anxious subjects have difficulty maintaining sleep, spend less time in deep sleep, and their sleep is more fragmented than that of normal subjects. Conversely, sleep deprivation may produce symptoms that fall within the total complex of anxiety.4 Although current opinion suggests that insomnia and anxiety are separate entities, their symptoms overlap considerably. https://neuro.psychiatryonline.org//fu/10.1176/jnp.16.1.19

Just like the seasons, your body has a natural rhythm for sleep and wakefulness. If you have difficulties with sleep there could be several reasons in terms of Chinese medicine patterns. Seeing an acupuncturist allows them to assess the natural rhythm your body is experiencing (or not). Some of the factors that are looked at include: - difficulty falling asleep or the absence of sleep - waking frequently during the night - waking too early ... Any of these are signs of an imbalance in the yin and yang aspects of your system in relation to its natural rhythm. Got questions? Ask your practitioner, they would be happy to help you out.

Season it! Summer MINT What happens when youre chewing some mind gum or sucking on a peppermint and you take in a big breath of air? Even on a hot summer day it can feel like you just sucked in cold. This is the cooling nature of mint. Thermal nature: cool | Properties: acrid, aromatic... Benefits: There are multiple therapeutic uses for mint, in fact, it is the first cooling herb that is taught in the Chinese medicine materia medica and is known as a wind-heat releasing herb. Bo He (mint) is used therapeutically to help relieve heat conditions associated with cold and flu-like fever, sore throat and headache. It is excellent at settling stomach bloating and lifting the spirits. Mint is a real game-changer when it comes to enhancing mood. You can add a sprig or two to your summer drinks for a refreshing drink that also helps promote perspiration and cools the body. Ahhhhhh cool and minty fresh!

So who are our Stroke Recovery Acupuncturists? What lead them to developing a one of a kind Stroke Recovery Program in Calgary? We're glad you asked! Visit our blog and meet our team, Dr. Allan Fradsham and Dr. Heather Fulker. Their stories are nothing short of inspirational! https://www.acupuncturecollective.ca//20/08/unexpected-joy... Written by our colleague, Dr. Janice Brown, this article is a personal perspective, a story, of two incredible practitioners: "When I was the Dean of Academics at CITCM, Heather walked into my office and said, 'I want to do a research study. I want to find a way to show that acupuncture helps and can make a difference. I want to do this the right way so people understand and can embrace it. I will do all the leg work (or arm work), I will do the study, I will find the peopleI will find a way. Please just give me permission.' So, we took it to the Executive Director, and you know what? Persuasive Heather got her way." If you know someone who could benefit from our Stroke Recovery Program, have them visit our website to learn how Acupuncture may support them. Season it! Summer LEMON When you think of summer picnics, somewhere in that vision is a tall, cool glass of lemonade. Heres why. Thermal nature: cooling | Flavour & Properties: very sour, astringent... Benefits: Lemon has a natural ability to increase the production of fluids in the body. It is used to benefit conditions that are marked by fluid deficiency like diabetes, cramps and sore throat. Lemon also has an antiseptic, anti-microbial effect on bacteria found in the mouth and intestines and helps freshen breath. Diluted with water, like lemonade it is used to reduce the effects of summer heat. I can see my dad mopping his forehead with the back of his forearm wiping the sweat off his brow when he had been working hard in the heat of a summers afternoon, and taking a big drink of lemonade to refresh his body. It just feels natural. Healthy and delicious!

Welcome to our Season it! food features. In Chinese medicine, type and timing of food is important to influence health and the climate in your body. Todays food feature is a beautiful example. Season it! Summer WATERMELON Can you think of any food that feels more summer than this?... Thermal nature: very cooling | Flavour: sweet Benefits: Just like the name says, it is dense with water. Cool, refreshing and a summer favourite for more reasons than taste. In Chinese medicine terms, watermelon is considered to influence the heart, bladder and stomach, it helps build body fluids and is a diuretic so can help with urinary difficulty. It is also said to moisten the intestines, so dont overdo it if you are prone to loose stools. Your body sometimes craves more water in the heat of summer and this is a great way to pack a water wallop into your diet, easy to get kids to eat and is super refreshing. Summer heat is one of the things that watermelon can help treat, big thirst, diminished urination and also can help with conditions like sore throat and mouth cankers.
