Hello members! As you know, our 16th annual fundraiser at Port Cunnington Lodge was posponed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Your contribution helps with this season’s work on managing the Riparian Zone shoreline. This important buffer is being impacted by climate change induced storms. Furthermore our science based, new digital temp loggers will provide valuable info on our fish habitat spawning streams. These initiatives are part of our broader 2020/2021 Muskoka Watershed S...hed Action Group business plan. Early Summer, we are planning to have an online auction as we anticipate not having our 17th Annual AGM once again. Here is our invitation for you or your organization to donate to our 17th Annual fundraiser. Your interest in our conscientious conservancy and contribution is invaluable to our ongoing projects. So here is an opportunity to help. Along with your 2021 Membership donation, you can also help with a monetary donation, or donate an item to our Online Silent Auction. Date to be confirmed late spring. We thank you in advance for your consideration and continued support of ADFSF. Fish without a licence - Canadian residents can fish in Ontario without buying a fishing licence, during February 13-15, 2021. Tips on fishing with kids Relax! Bring a smile and an open mind. Keep it simple. An inexpensive rod and reel, with live bait and a bobber, will get you off to a good start.... Fish from shore. Kids sometimes need a chance to run around. Fish for little fish. Kids often care more about the number of fish they catch than the size. Sunfish and other pan-sized fish are plentiful and easy to hook. Make it fun. Encourage patience, cooperation, and trying something new. Teach skills. Kids learn by doing. Help children problem-solve. Lines get tangled. Hooks get snagged. Fish stop biting. Identifying a problem and finding its solution is a valuable skill. Be flexible. If your child is too excited to sit still with a bobber and live bait, change tactics or move to a different spot. Be a good eco-citizen. Don’t litter, follow the fishing regulations, and release any fish you don’t plan to eat. Don’t stay too long. End your trip on a high note. #adfsf #family #fishing #fun #conservation #shoreline #conservancy

Province introduces harvesting season for double-crested cormorants By Craig Momney CTV News Barrie Videographer... BARRIE -- The Ontario government is taking steps towards preventing what it calls "harmful impacts" to local ecosystems caused by the double-crested cormorants. On Friday, John Yakabuski, the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, announced the province is introducing an annual fall cormorant harvesting season. In 2019, a survey done by the ministry found an estimated minimum of 143,000 breeding cormorants in 344 colonies based on nest counts across the Great Lakes and numerous inland lakes in Ontario, including Georgian Bay. Those studied suggest the populations of the bird are increasing. "We've heard concerns from property owners, hunters and anglers, and commercial fishers about the kind of damage cormorants have caused in their communities, so we're taking steps to help them deal with any local issues," said Minister Yakabuski. "In large amounts, cormorant droppings can kill trees and other vegetation and destroy traditional nesting habitats for some other colonial waterbirds, so it's critical that we take action to strike a healthy balance in local ecosystems." The harvesting season will allow hunters to hunt 15 birds per day beginning September 15 and run until December 31. At the same time, while some may choose to eat the bird, hunters who don't must properly dispose of the carcass. In November 2019, the province proposed the hunting season run from May until September. Still, numerous groups, including the Georgian Bay Association, lobbied against it saying it could pose a high risk to public safety during the summer months.

FAQ - The Muskoka River Watershed The Muskoka River Watershed is located on the eastern side of Georgian Bay. The headwaters of the river arise on the western slopes of Algonquin Park, and flow southwesterly for a distance of approximately 210 km to discharge into the southeast corner of Georgian Bay. The watershed measures over 62 km at its widest point and is approximately 120 km long, encompassing an area of approximately 466,000 hectares (4,660 sq km). The watershed is di...vided into three main drainage areas: the North Branch, South Branch, and Lower Muskoka. The North and South Branches comprise approximately the eastern two-thirds of the watershed. Originating in the highlands of Algonquin Park they flow southwesterly until converging south of Bracebridge and then flow into Lake Muskoka. The Lower Muskoka subwatershed covers approximately the western one-third of the watershed, and receives the inflow from the North and South Branches as well as Lakes Joseph and Rosseau. This combined flow passes through the Moon and Musquash Rivers and discharges into Georgian Bay. Over 2000 lakes have been carved out of the Precambrian Shield and cover over 17% of the watershed. The three largest lakes in the watershed are Lake Muskoka (11,579 ha), Lake of Bays (6,763 ha) and Lake Rosseau (6,258 ha). The Muskoka River descends approximately 345 m in elevation along its 210 km journey from its headwaters to its mouth at Georgian Bay.
