Whatever you do do not attempt to clear a live round via a cleaning rod or dowel down through the muzzle; in fact, do not do this with any bore obstruction as, inevitably, the rod or dowel wedges in or around the obstruction to seat it good and fast! If the rod does not wedge then the obstruction itself wedges and more often than not the rod or dowel breaks off in the bore as you strike it with a hammer (because it over-flexes) and then you have a real nightmare on your hands.... I have cleared several of these for customers (using a specialized live round extraction tool from the chamber side) but the bullet or obstruction left in the bore is still very time consuming and expensive to get out - along with the broken rod or dowel. The worst one seen to date in my shop has been a Browning X bolt .30-06 that had a live round so horribly jammed that it is requiring a whole new chamber with all the extraordinary machining that requires for the X bolt design. In the photos you can see how much I have had to machine forward on the barrel before threading and cutting off the old barrel face and part of the thread. If X bolt barrels were available that might have been a consideration but Briwning will not sell them so expensive machining is the order of the day to get this X bolt shooting again. See more

What an excellent historical and technical study on the M16A1 and its early development - along with the politically induced problems forced upon it by the US Army Ordnance Board. It has evolved, via many small refinements over the years, to become a very fine rifle. Of course, one of the inherent weaknesses has remained with it and that was and is the flimsy magazine lips (though there are much tougher mag materials available today). The AK series have always been more sturd...y in the magazine department and in other ways as well, but the M16 has something that the AK has never managed to achieve (the latter's weakness dictated by its very robust design and built-in slop) - i.e., accuracy! Personally, I think a good balance of accuracy and, certainly, robustness too, need to be found in any fine battle rifle and Eugene Stoner's brain-child has those critical elements in spades and, ironically, no thanks to the Army's Ordnance Board which actually wanted the rifle to fail! However, if you want a truly superlative military rifle you will be forced to pony-up some major shekels for the Steyr AUG - hah hah (just my prejudice showing through here for all things Austrian in guns and optics [with the Steyr Mannlicher-Schoenauer being the most beautiful rifle in all the world]).
