Trent from Australia sent us this technical question: "I'm working on a show -- and using your RC4 system of course! We have an automatic car window built into... the set, among other practicals. It opens using 12V in one polarity, and closes using 12V with the opposite polarity. I am trying to find a way of linking it into the RC4 system. Do you have any advice? Have you come across this question before?" Indeed I have! And it's easy. All you need is a DMX2dim and a small 12V double-pole/double-throw (DPDT) relay. Use one dimmer channel with the linear curve for motor speed control. Use the other dimmer with the non-dim curve to flip the relay. Wire the relay contacts so they reverse the polarity of power to the motor. Thus: DimA for speed, DimB for direction. A pic is worth a thousand words, and is attached. There's another even simpler way! Our new RC4Magic DMXfb has a DC motor mode (see http://tinyurl.com/RC4M-DMXfb). Most of the really cool modes in the DMXfb involve outputting AC waves, but it can also output DC in either polarity with full dimming control. Thus, it will control your car window motor in both directions, with no additional hardware required. On the DMX control side of things, you have two options: 2-channel mode works just like the DMX2dim solution: 1 channel for speed, the other for direction. The single-channel mode is off in the center: above center runs CW, below center runs CCW. Thanks for asking this great question! Jim RC4
