Movember is changing the face of men’s health on a global scale, focusing on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Stigmas associated with mental health are prevalent and common. We spoke to Gender Committee member Addison White regarding his own struggles with mental health and why it's important to recognize these conflicts and ask for help. "I have suffered with mental health issues since I was a teenager. I have had issues with Depr...ession and struggled daily. I was bullied and teased growing up for coming from a poor family and was always overweight. Going through school growing up was a struggle. I was not able to come out as a gay man back in the 80’s as I did not feel safe and all of this drove me further in into a deep depression. Thoughts of suicide were real, crying uncontrollably for seemingly no reason to my family, hiding in a room alone, not having many friends, eating disorders all hidden by a wonderful Academy award winning acting role of trying to be normal. Really what is normal? After seeking out help as a young adult, I was finally diagnosed as having Depression. After trying different medication, I finally have some stability in my life. This does not make my mental health issues go away, it makes it more manageable. I still have days and weeks where I must be that award-winning actor and put on an outside face to cover the feeling on the inside. I do have people I trust I can talk to. I have their support and that of family. I have an amazing and understanding partner. Most of all, I work for an amazing workplace and work family who understands my mental health issues and are willing to work with me. I have also become more open about my Depression and Anxiety and I am more than willing to share my experience as I have learned, sharing these experiences can be helpful to others who may be dealing with the same problems. It is not something to hide and not something to be embarrassed about. If you feel you struggle with mental health issues, please seek out help. I promise you will not regret it. " If you or someone you know is in crisis, or needs emotional support we urge you to head to movember.com/getsupport for crisis support options.

The pervasiveness and severity of domestic violence impacting the workplace demands the attention of employers. We have introduced an important new policy that formally lays out how we will be supporting employees who are coping with intimate partner/domestic violence. After consulting with local industry stakeholders, Adsum House and feedback from our Gender committee, the newly formed Domestic Violence Leave Policy strives to balance tactful and confidential direct-support from Admiral, with offering employees and their families helpful, third-party resources. Please watch our conversation with Site Director Bec Cable-Munroe for additional insights into this important policy.

To recognize National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Admiral will be providing added funding to two local organizations who do important work in this area. In addition to the $2380 raised by the Customer Loyalty SCRs, we will give $1500 to Bryony house, raising the total donation to $3880. Furthermore, Admiral historically has sponsored a table at the Successful Canadian Women’s Dinner, a fundraiser which is a key source of funding for Adsum House.... This year, in lieu of attendance at the event, cancelled due to Covid precautions, Admiral will be making a $2500 contribution directly to Adsum House. Bryony House is a 24-bed shelter for abused women and their children. Each year, an estimated 470 women and children stay with Bryony House and 2,500 distress calls answered. Adsum for Women & Children provides safe shelter, housing, services and support to those in need. Adsum House is devoted to reducing homelessness and promoting independent living for youth, women and children across 7 locations in the HRM.

On October 30th, Admiral Halifax celebrated two years of top performers with the 2020 Admiral Awards Glitter & Gold Gala. Broadcast virtually for the first time, the annual gala is Admiral Halifax's premier recognition event. Forty-six awards in all, Heads of Department from across Admiral honoured Halifax's brightest along with special guest presenters such as frontline healthcare workers and local sponsors. In the latter part of the show, awards such as SCR of the Year, TM ...of the Year and CCR of the Year were presented live from the The Bus Stop Theatre Co-op by members of the operations team. While we couldn't all be together, great effort was made to feel the prestige of the event. Hundreds of gift bags with catered lunch (and wine) were lovingly hand delivered to staff to enjoy during their watch parties at home. The Halifax Admiral family arranged several virtual watch parties (with some small in person gatherings) full of food, drink, photo contests, playlists, dress up and games. Congratulations to all of our winners and a big thank you to the team who made this event possible, bringing the site together to celebrate in the Admiral way.

As part of the Gender Committee’s Charity Champ efforts, we want to invite employees to raise awareness for men’s mental health by making a move. We’re asking Admiral staff to run, walk, leap or sprint 60km in November for the 60 men we lose every hour, across the world, to suicide. Participating staff will be eligible to win 1 of 3 $100 GC to a local sporting goods store.... Let’s Make-a-Move, Admiral Halifax! With a local spin on Movember activities, the Gender Committee will be raising funds all November long for Metro Turning Point emergency shelter.
