Design #tiptuesday To keep kitchen renovation costs down, use ready-to-assemble cabinets instead of custom. Limit the number of drawers, dividers, and specialty inserts. If you do choose to have custom cabinetry made, select materials that are less costly, like painted MDF or thermally fused wood look laminate instead of real hardwood.

It should come as no surprise that kitchen renovations are complex. From the construction components when changing the floor plan (drywall, paint, electrical, outlets, plumbing, etc.) to the finishes (flooring, cabinets, countertops, backsplash, millwork, etc.) and even the final touches (appliances, light fixtures, window coverings, furniture, accessories, etc.), there are a lot of moving pieces. Which also means that budgeting for your kitchen renovation can be tricky. Wi...th some professional guidance, however, estimating your investment level for that dream kitchen doesn’t have to be a headache-inducing task. Today, I’m going to walk you through my process for kitchen renovation estimates in the hopes of simplifying the process and showing you that the kitchen you’ve been hoping for might not be as far away as you once thought. Let’s jump right in...on the blog. https://www.adriennesdesigns.com//kitchen-renovation-estim

**New Blog Post**https://www.adriennesdesigns.com/blog/colour-in-the-home With its wide open space and vast array of finish selections, the kitchen is a blank canvas for colour. It is called the heart of the home for a reason, so I don’t encourage you to go crazy with colour here...because you will have to live in it, after all...but the right amount of color can take a mundane kitchen and make it magnificent. Try a colourful backsplash in an all white kitchen to create a liv...ely space. Or paint the kitchen cabinets a unique colour that brings a smile to your face. And don’t forget to add colourful upholstery to the dining chairs, bar stools, and window treatments. These small décor choices add up to a room with big personality. Looking for more colour inspiration for your home? There's lots of it on the blog. Stephanie Moore, Photographer See more

*New Blog Post*https://www.adriennesdesigns.com/blog/colour-in-the-home I frequently get inquiries at the beginning of a new year...sometimes for a complete redesign, and sometimes for a smaller-scale refresh. No matter the project, though, this time of year, the colour conversation is always front and center. The fact is that after you put away all of your sparkling, colourful holiday decor, your home tends to feel a little lackluster. You miss the excitement of the twinklin...g lights and the busyness of the pretty seasonal decorations. So your mind starts to wander... You realize that with the cold weather and slower pace of winter days, you have some time to take on a project. And just like that, you’re calling up your designer with ideas for a beautiful home in this new year because you know that adding colourful decor to spaces that have otherwise dated finishes can actually help them feel fresh, updated, and fun again without a complete remodel.

On The Blog - This month I'm talking about color and the best places to add it to your home. The front door is a great start! Stephanie Moore, Photographer https://www.adriennesdesigns.com/blog/colour-in-the-home

Our lifelong associations with colour influence our everyday lives, whether we realize it or notThat subtle blue that transports you back into your grandma’s kitchen all those years ago...the hue that fills you with joy as you remember her loving embrace and the peace you felt every time you walked into her home. Ahhh...The cardinal red that reminds you of your first car...being handed the keys and knowing that it was all yours...the first big, hard-earned purchase of your y...oung adult life. A wave of exhilaration and youthfulness washes over you. Can’t you just feel that sense of glee all over again?!That’s the power of colour. It is so much more than a gorgeous accompaniment to a well-designed room. It sets a mood. It impacts our emotions. It evokes a feeling. Because of its tremendous impact on our lives, selecting colours for your home should be a thoughtful process, and I’m here to help! Read all about it on the blog. https://www.adriennesdesigns.com/blog/colour-in-the-home

As a designer, it is all about taking the time to really get to know your clients. To discover their ideal aesthetic. To listen to their story. To weave together pieces of their life with their big dreams to create a space that far exceeds expectations. When you can do those things, you’re able to create a space so perfect for the clients that they are still happy years later...just like Laurie and John. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again it is these kinds of proje...cts that make me love my job! It is a joy and an honour to come alongside clients who need some guidance and help them create a home that is everything they wanted, but didn’t know how to articulate. And when they are still amazed, years later, each time they walk into their space...well, that is why I do what I do. I love helping my clients fall in love with their homes all over again. Read Laurie and John's renovation story on the blog. It will leave you inspired...guaranteed! https://www.adriennesdesigns.com//living-in-professionally

When I first met this lovely couple, they were at odds with their kitchen, and frankly, with the concept of hiring a designer as well. You see, Laurie and John had started their renovation process with another designer. But, early on in the process, Laurie realized that her and the designer were simply not a good fit. (Yes, this does happen sometimes.) The original designer had developed a design plan and chosen finishes that didn’t feel at all like them and when challenged,... an argument would ensue. It became very clear that it was best to part ways. A little while later, on a Saturday afternoon, Laurie wandered into the local Benjamin Moore showroom that I was working in at the time, helping customers choose the perfect paint colours for their projects. She and I got to talking about her renovation and I offered her some advice. As the conversation neared its end, she asked me if I would be interested in and willing to come to their home for a few hours to offer design suggestions for finishes that would help them achieve the comfortable look and feel they were hoping for. Despite the fact that she had only two inspiration photos, that, upon first glance, didn’t seem to work together whatsoever, I agreed. I could tell she really had no idea what she was looking for, and I was confident I could help solve this design dilemma for a very deserving couple. Want to see how it all turned out? Now, I’ll be the first to admit that it is anyone’s guess as to what the holidays might look like this year. In our ever-changing, mid-pandemic world, it is easy to feel disheartened and even anxious about this very subject. But I want to look forward optimistically, plan for the best, and I hope to inspire you to do the same. And what better time than the present to take action? Whether the intention is to host large-scale dinner parties or intimate gatherings with a few family members or friends, the same basic rules apply to creating a home that is warm and welcoming while also practical and purposeful in layout and design. Details in my recent blog post. https://www.adriennesdesigns.com//kitchen-design-ideal-for

Think back to the last holiday gathering you hosted...was it Thanksgiving or Christmas last year? (You know, before life came to a screeching halt) No matter the holiday, consider how you felt as you prepared the meal, arranged your furniture, and hosted family and friends. If you’re like many of my clients, each holiday celebration, while wonderful and memorable in many ways, can also be headache-inducing when your space is working against you instead of for you. The kitche...n, which should be the heart of the home, often becomes a hindrance to fully embracing the spirit of the holidays. When the flow isn’t right, you’re always running out of counter space. If it’s closed off from the rest of the home, it prevents the chef from participating in the group festivities. Because I believe you shouldn’t have to spend another holiday irritated with your kitchen, I’m sharing some design suggestions for a kitchen that is ideally suited to entertaining at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all year-long. Check them out on the blog. https://www.adriennesdesigns.com//kitchen-design-ideal-for

I believe that lighting, to a room, is like accessories to an outfit...it can be dressed up or down, and it can elevate a space from boring to exceptional. Whether you’re looking for the perfect pendant lighting above your new kitchen counters, beautiful wall sconces ideally suited to makeup application, or that one-of-a-kind accent light for your stunning outdoor covered patio, I’ve got you covered. Wondering how to select the perfect lighting fixtures for your home? My simple 3-step process will help... Start with determining the correct size for the fixture. (Believe it or not, there are different formulas for each room of the home.) Then look for a style of fixture that enhances the look and feel you’re wanting to create for the intended space. ... Finally, evaluate the need for different types of lighting...do you need recessed lights, hanging fixtures, wall sconces (or all 3), and how many lamps? I’m sharing an inside look at my lighting selection process as well as lots of gorgeous inspiration on the blog this month go take a look! Few things are more annoying than a dimly lit kitchen or laundry room. I mean, have you ever tried preparing dinner for your family without ample lighting...or matching socks in the dark?! Without the proper lighting, those tasks are unpleasant and frustrating, to say the least. Beyond its obvious function, however, lighting is so much more than just an essential tool in your home It is the one element in a room that is most important for setting ambiance and mood. It’s wha...t makes a room feel good. It can reinforce a particular design style. It often makes a dramatic statement. https://www.adriennesdesigns.com//best-lighting-for-home-c So the question is, how do you find the perfect balance of beauty and function for the light fixtures in your home? In order for any renovation to be successful, there have to be clear lines of communication between the contractor, trades, and you, the client. Luckily, you don’t have to go it alone! I love taking care of my clients, ensuring their projects run smoothly, and helping them bring their dream home to life. What else do you need to know about a renovation before starting? One of the very first decisions you will need to make as you begin the renovation process is the amount you are willing to invest and most people have no idea what a renovation truly costs! In order to avoid sticker shock when that first quote rolls in, I always suggest that homeowners start looking at material costs when coming up with this amount. Better yet, I would encourage you to book a Design Work Session with me to go through costs. As we look at numbers together, it... may be the difference between deciding now is the right time to begin renovating, or waiting a few more years to save up for the renovation you dream of. Are you entering the renovation process unprepared? Do you know how long your project will take, what it will cost, or in what order to make decisions? In fact, many of my new clients have told me they felt lost before finding me. If you are feeling this way, too, I’m dedicating this month’s blog post to you. Mixing creams and whites is one of the hardest things to achieve as a color expert and designer. The key is repetition. My clients were in love with the calcite white #quartzite counters but we had already decided on cream cabinetry and millwork throughout this gorgeous new build. So, how do you mix a blue white with cream? I repeated the blue white color of the counters using a 12x24 tile for the floor plus a #carerramarble penny tile border. Next we painted the walls the same cream color as the cabinets and trims. To add interest we used tongue and groove on the vanity wall to add texture while still repeating the color. @stephaniemoorephoto

Following on from our powder room (see previous Post) I'm using this gorgeous 24x48 large format tile for the master en-suite. We will be creating a waterfall look by applying the tile to the ceiling of the shower, cascading in down the walls and finally adding it to the floor. Adding pretty wall sconces and warm metals to coordinate with the warm veining in the tile.

I'm working on a full house renovation at the moment. Among other things, we are converting a bedroom into a master walk-in closet. When I am designing cabinetry for my clients, I dig deep into how they use their spaces day to day. I ask questions like " How long are the items you hang?" How much shoe storage to you need?" Do you need and ironing board incorporated into the cabinets?" "Pretty" is great but when you combine "pretty" with the ultimate in how each person uses th...eir space, that's where the winning design is found. Love my job!

Pulling together materials for a new build, starting with the main elements of the kitchen. In this case my starting point was the marble look luxury vinyl tile. I love how this one has a bit a satin finish giving it an elegant look and feel. Natural wood elements are a great contrast to add some warmth, and I'm leaving the counters plain to not compete with the floors.

I'm not quite sure how to show up on SM these days. It seems strange to continue business as usual, when things are less than usual. With many of my projects sitting on hold, I am grateful for the time to sit down during the day to write a blog post instead of burning the midnight oil, and never finishing. I guess that's the one thing we have all been given is the gift of more time, even though at times, it may not feel like a gift. I think it may be safe to say that design ...probably isn't the first thing on your minds, but I still think the world needs beauty and goodness and I want to be able to offer posts of inspirational spaces that may serve as a distraction to the reality we are all living. There may be some of you feeling frustrated (me included) with how your space is looking and functioning now that you're forced to hangout there 24/7. So... She has always been great at choosing color and styling her home. I love how she repeated the front door color in the exterior decor. Virtual design is not new to my business. I am thankful more than ever these last few weeks that technology exists to allow me to continue working with my clients to provide my design expertise without having in person meetings. My clients have purchase a new to them home and will be relocating without any furniture. They have hired me to virtually design 3 spaces in their new home. I have been working with them for several weeks sending live videos of 3D renderings showing... them how the space could look. Once we have settled on a floor plan layout, my clients will receive a PDF presentation that includes still shots of the floor plan, showing them where the items are to be placed, as well as the dimensions of every item that needs to be purchased. Hello friends! I pray this evening that you and your loved ones are well and safe. It's been a good couple of months since my last post. Keeping up with work and doing my part to care for my terminally ill cousin has taken the majority of my time. Last week, a few days after celebrating his 50th birthday, he earned his angel wings. Despite my own personal challenges, we are all in a season of experiencing challenging and disrupting days and we must stay positive. I am remai...ning vigilant, practicing the many recommended habits and best practices for best hygiene staying focused on prevention and good health. It's a daily assessment, and things are changing from morning to afternoon but rest assured that I will keep my family, clients and community's best interests at heart. I will continue to serve my clients by working safely as the circumstances warrant. My projects will continue to thrive and move forward. Currently, with the aid of modern communications, I will be working remotely and by private appointment depending on the circumstances. At this time, I am well and healthy. In the meantime, i will continue to work hard, post inspiration and recent projects and share photos of recent projects. Maybe just maybe, I'll get some blog posts that have been in limbo, completed! Stay safe everyone!

There are alot of choices when it comes to counters and they all have their pros and cons. In this kitchen renovation we chose to use Dekton by Cosentino. Dekton is highly scratch and UV resistant, its fireproof and resistant to freezing and thawing which also makes it perfect for outdoor kitchens. #kitc...hendesign #fireproof #dekton #countertops #renovationideas See more

My #bestnine2019. As I look back at the posts, I think it sums up my year quite well. Our hearts were broken with the sudden loss of our pup Max. We miss him so much but decided to welcome Leo into our home in the hope that he would ease our grief. Leo is 10 months old and has a crazy character that keeps us all on our toes. As always, I've been fortunate to be involved in some amazing projects, everything from new home builds and renovations to numerous redecorating proje...cts. We also refreshed our own home with a pretty new wall color! AND, this fall I wrote my very first, of several Blog posts, something that was a huge accomplishment for me personally. (Link for my latest one http://bit.ly/37cMyR4 Thank you all for supporting me and following along. Happy New Year my friends! . I hope 2020 is good to you all. #topnine2019 #instatop #interiordesignconsultant #designlover #truecolorexpert #interiorinspirations #kitchendesign #bathroomdesign #homesweethome #livecolorfully #cranbrookdesigner #cranbrookbc #bcliving

One if my projects in the last few months, has been refreshing a clients newly purchased home. He's been an easy client to please as each design element I choose he simply agrees to. This is something I'm definitely not used to because I've always approached design as more of a conversation as the majority of my clients like to have a few choices. So what's your preference, do you like choices or do you prefer to give your design professional "full reign!"... #designcollaboration #trustyourdesigner #hireadesigner

Have you ever wondered how to partially update your home and not end up with a space that looks like yesterday and today?

Its been 5 years this month since I wandered away from a 25 year career as a Certified Dental Assistant. Although I have always been passionate about interior design, I believe it was not intended to be my first path. My years as a CDA taught me to listen and be communicative with my patients. It also also taught me to think ahead, be organized and patient. Organization has always come naturally but patience? Not so much! I run into old patients all of the time and they al...ways say how much they miss me at the dental office. There are several that have even become interior design clients of mine which is sometimes mind blowing when I think about it. Looking back on the past 5 years in this new career, I am sometimes amazed that all of the qualities that made me a good CDA also make for a successful Interior Design business. And although there were definately times when didnt love being a CDA, I do believe that it was meant to be. What I learned in my previous career has definitely prepared me for this one. #thankful #notallwhowanderarelost #thankfulthursday #careerchange #solopreneur #womeninbusiness #interiorlover #interiordesign #ilovemyjob #cheerstothepast

It's not very often that I use mosaic tile, but in my latest kitchen refresh project (stay tuned this weekend for the blog post) it was a great choice!. It added just the right amount of texture without being eye crossing #tiletuesday #hextile #backsplash #texture ... #kitcheninspo #kitchenrefresh #designdetails #refreshyourspace #renovationproject #alittlegoesalongway #cranbrookdesigner #hireadesigner #cranbrookbc See more

Looking back on a main floor refresh we completed for a family this past summer. One of the questions I get asked most is "how do I update my older home without tearing everything out and ending up with a renovated space that looks old and new?" So I thought this would be the perfect project to document how we make that happen. Fast forward to today. I've been working for two months on that dang blog about the process of how we updated the finishes, tamed the clutter and dea...lt with the challenges, all without replacing the big ticket items. Seriously 2 months!!! So. I'm posting a pic, because maybe if I do, it will challenge me to GET IT DONE. Doing the projects and keeping up with social media and blogging can be a struggle for a #solopreneur but I'm issuing myself a challenge, so stay tuned! #renovation #blogging #challengeyourself #thestruggleisreal #womeninbusiness
