Hey there! You may know me as Amy, or the bird lady as our Oakville participants have so fondly nicknamed me. Lover of birds, nature, travel and all things food related, our participants have grown to expect that I will inquire about any new or yummy foods they’ve consumed lately...yes- I ask every day! In my spare time, you’ll find me hiking in the forest or canoeing to the middle of nowhere. Travel has been a big part of my life- from bungee jumping in Whistler, rid...ing a camel in Egypt, or (attempting) to surf in Nicaragua - I’m always looking for the next thing to check off my bucket list. But perhaps the most meaningful adventure I ever embarked on was when I moved to Calgary over 10 years ago. This is when I got my first job in this field, working with children with autism in a residential home. Im all about living life to its fullest and I like to believe that I share my enthusiasm and zest for life, food and birds with all of our participants. I hope this energy is contagious and encourages our participants to get out there and enjoy all of the little things life has to offer. The purpose of our lives is to be happy- Dalai Lama Staff stories Amy D. Staff Stories Carole VanDerVoort, Director of Program Development. Born in Northern Ireland , at the age of 16 I volunteered with my best friend May, at an adult day program. I loved going on the people carrier (you call it a van ) to collect anyone who needed a ride to the program. (This was where I first found my passion and made developmental services my lifelong career. ) A few years later I immigrated to Canada as my new home. ... Luckily my love and connections to my homeland ,, provided for an amazing opportunity to develop an overseas exchange program with Community Living Elmira . Over 4 years, we saw 20 people from our surrounding communities travel to Northern Ireland, where they lived and worked for 4 weeks at a time. A highlight of my career which I hope to do again in the future! My connection to Shelley and Rodd, the founders of Adults in Motion, began 11 years ago, when they were first looking at the development of their Day Program in Kitchener. So when I was offered the opportunity in 2020 to consult again with them and then be brought on as the Director of Program Development, I jumped at the chance. Cheers to the next Adults in Motion adventure.... perhaps it’ll take us back to ! An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea. Who would have guessed this is the baby of 7 with 3 older brothers and 3 older sisters! Imagine our Director Rodd being the 7th in line for the bath water You’ve come a long way Roddy! Born in Newfoundland in the late 60’s he remembers the milk man, ringer washers (you guessed it, he got stuck in one) and honey pots (in case you hadn’t guessed, those were... shall we say... toilet buckets ). Growing up on a large farm outside St John’s, his neighbours fondly rem...ember him as ‘Little Rodney’, the little boy who didn’t like clothes but who loved to swim in the pond. Rumour has it Rodd is also infamously known as the little geezler who accidentally lit the dog house AND the grass crop on fire . (As you may have also guessed, he is NOT the head of our Health and Safety Committee.) Ontario was lucky enough to adopt Rodd in the 70’s when he became a ‘mainlander’ but we all know he’ll forever be a Newfoundlander at heart . Birch Beer, roast chicken chips, boiled dinner, chips with dressing and gravy and the Leafs remain his favourites. Rodd is famous in the world of Adults in Motion simply for being who he is - compassionate, sincere and having a mysterious talent for lighting up a room when he enters. He’s also legendarily known for being ‘slightly’ tardy, erupting rooms with laughter (most likely off topic) and breaking the odd rule . Most affectionally called ‘Pain the Butt’ by all those who love him the most, it’s his unofficial-official title around here (always sure to bring a laugh when said). He remembers being asked many, many years ago what he would do if he became a millionaire and didn’t have to work again. He replied, ‘I’d go to Blue Jays games everyday with my buddies with Downs Syndrome’ (even back then our leader knew what he wanted!). Well Rodd, sorry about the millions but it seems you’re living the most important part of the dream - lucky b’y. . . . #Director #CoFounder #TheRodd #Storytelling #Newfoundlander #AdultsInMotion #DayPrograms #VirtualPrograms #DisabilityServices #BeAmazing #LemonsToLemonade #2009 #Hamilton #Cambridge #Oakville #Kitchener #NotForProfit #StillGrowing

For as far back as I can remember, every winter my dad would always build us an ice rink in our backyard it was a pretty awesome tradition spending our entire Christmas break skating away - and I mean entire break. There would be days my parents would find my sisters and I passed out in the snow banks having naps in between skates! Who needed the indoors?! When our family moved to Lake Erie we thought the tradition would come to an end, but one year my dad got creative and ...built a rink right on the lake!As you can see from the photo the ice wasn’t exactly what we call perfect skating conditions, but hey it was still a pretty cool experience! This past year, at his new home, he made the biggest rink yet!! Swipe to see the actual size of this thing it was huge! It provided the perfect opportunity for my family to get together over the holidays this year while socially distancing outside. Family traditions are and always will be one of my favourite things! It all started when a girl met a boy and they fell in love . . . They say Rome wasn’t built in a day and certainly neither was our path. It took us 23 years, lots of lessons, celebrations , our share of mistake and some tears but here we still are - full steam ahead. ... . . . The idea of Adults in Motion (or at least the spirit of what would become AIM) began in 1998 when Rodd and I first met working in a group home for Guelph Community Living with adults with special needs and high risk behaviours. Rodd, the overnight guy who had all the staff in awe of his 4 course meals he would prep for the residents, how darn kind and compassionate he always was and his stack of Tim’s coffees in hand for everyone every time he showed up (late) for his shift. (He’s trying to tell me right now he wasn’t ever late.... some things never change). Then there was me, who I’m sure drove the older, more seasoned and experienced staff nuts with my ‘let’s change the world’ attitude, stubbornness and persistence (we all know that person, yup that was me). The two of us made quite a pair where falling in love was easy and we heard wedding bells less than a year later. Never looked back. . . . After careers in social services and operating our own private residential care homes , our path took us back to where we started... to our friends with special needs. In 2009 we founded Adults in Motion Day Programs, feeling determined to create real solutions for individuals with disabilities and their families. Today our motto remains the same, to find a need and fill it. . . . My mom recently asked me about retirement and what our future holds. Without hesitation I laughed at the idea of stopping doing what we love... and to do what instead? Take up golf? No offence but no thanks. We couldn’t think of a better place to spend our days for now and for always, growing and experiencing life with our Adults in Motion family. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again - sorry folks but you’re stuck with us!!! . . . #ExecutiveDirectors #StoryTelling #FindANeedAndFillIt #AdultsInMotion #DayPrograms #VirtualPrograms #DisabilityService #BeAmazing #Lemon See more
