Ahimsa is often thought of on a physical level (non-killing). If I hit you, I cause you pain which you can feel and maybe see a result of that pain; but another... form of practicing ahimsa is by thoughts. We see this all the time with ourselves. Thinking we are not enough, thinking we lack something, or thinking we are inferior. These are only a few examples, but let's be honest, we are not very friendly with ourselves most of the time. Yoga teaches us that our efforts to better ourselves extend further than just speech or actions. The real practice comes when we conquer our thoughts. Breaking free from the limitations we have put on ourselves and slowly identifying with our true nature. Pratipaksha bhavana (opposite cultivation) can help us counteract these negative thoughts by supplementing them for a positive one.
