NATIONAL CHOPSTICKS DAY Each year on National Chopsticks Day, people all over the world celebrate the humble and ancient utensils on February 6th. Around 1200 B....C., Chinese cooks began using chopsticks to prepare food. These tools were likely long enough to reach into hot cooking pots. Then about 400 B.C., when fuels for cooking became scarce, food was prepared in smaller pieces reducing the number of resources needed to cook it. At the same time, the need for sharp eating utensils faded, and shorter chopsticks entered the scene. The Chinese term for chopsticks is kuai-tzu. Once these handy eating tools found their way to the dinner table, the spread around the world. Portable and elegant in their design they also vary in style from region to region. Today they may be made from wood such as bamboo or aspen. Elaborately carved chopsticks may be carved from jade, ivory, or wood. Some chopsticks are ornately painted with miniature scenes. Imagine being for example in the heart of Beijing at an incredible local eatery with your chopsticks. Wouldn’t that be fun right now

Groundhog Day is a popular North American tradition that happens on February 2. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks; but if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early. While the tradition remains popular in modern times, studies have found no consistent correlation ...between a groundhog seeing its shadow and the subsequent arrival time of spring-like weather.[2] The weather lore was brought from German-speaking areas where the badger (German: Dachs) is the forecasting animal. This appears to be an enhanced version of the lore that clear weather on the Christian festival of Candlemas forebodes a prolonged winter. The Groundhog Day ceremony held at Punxsutawney in western Pennsylvania, centering around a semi-mythical groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil, has become the most attended ceremony. Grundsow Lodges in Pennsylvania Dutch Country in the southeastern part of the state celebrate them as well. Other cities in the United States and Canada have also adopted the event. See more

Baked Alaska, also known as omelette norvégienne, omelette surprise, or omelette sibérienne depending on the country, is a dessert consisting of ice cream and cake topped with browned meringue. The dish is made of ice cream placed in a pie dish, lined with slices of sponge cake or Christmas pudding, and topped with meringue. The entire dessert is then placed in an extremely hot oven for a brief time, long enough to firm and caramelize the meringue but not long enough to begin melting the ice cream. When I think of Baked Alaska, the first thing that pops into my head is not actually food but an incredible expedition with one of the many small ship operators such as Lindblad Expeditions. One which is full of learning and excitement, travelling with like minded individuals. Alaska is pure, profound and alive with wildness on land and sea.

On a cold, wet day in 1942 weary travelers to the small Shannon Airport in southwest Ireland found their way to a restaurant and chef Joe Sheridan. To warm his guests, he served them hot coffee, spiked with whiskey and topped with whipped cream. Irish Coffee. Here is how to make it - Starting with a warm glass, fill 2/3rds full of freshly brewed coffee. Stir in a heaping teaspoon of sugar. Add 1 ounce of Irish whiskey. Adding the cream, so it floats is the tricky part. According to the Buena Vista account, and at the suggestion of San Francisco’s mayor, a dairyman, cream that is 48 hours old, is best. However, others recommend whipping cream (not whipped cream) that has been lightly whipped or foamed. When the coffee has stopped swirling from stirring in the sugar, pour the foamy cream over the back of a spoon. Yum!!!!!!
