Advocating Hope 28.10.2021

So it has been a year I headed out up one of my favorite paddling locations yesterday. It was one of those glorious days where the trees are dressing for the autumn ball and the leaves dance and sail along the water. As I paddled I reflected that it was this time last year that I had taken on my first private supervision client. At that point I was working full time at the hospital and juggling to keep on top of my future plans. I had already registered my business name an...d I was in the throes of learning more about creating an on line presence. I had so many questions (Thank you Lori Lynn for being the forerunner and answering as many as you could) I smile now as my initial private practice supervisee has now completed her qualifying through CRPO and is starting up her own private practice. We discuss often this next step in her journey and I can recognize in her many of the trepidations and fears that I had a year ago. As I sat in my kayak amongst the old maples and watched the water spiders and minnow zip aboutIt is hard not to become metaphoric and compare the private practice path to my paddling. There seem to be many logs below the surface. You often feel that they will hang you up and tip you over. Only to find surprisingly that if you let the fear go you can flow right over them. Even now and then though you do snag and you learn to breathe and let the momentum of the water and the will of your vessel move you along. And so it has been a year And here I am! ...35 more days before I retire from my 12 years working at the hospital. Some weeks are still over whelming because I work 3 days for the hospital and 3 full days in private practiceBut other weeks I have 2 days off and I can see the beauty of the river I travel. Soonvery soon I will work a 4 day work week for 3 weeks and take the 4th week off to paddlesnowshoedogsledcreatewhatever life holds out for me in the adventure I call my life For those who are beginning this journey trust in your vessel and even more yourselfknow that there is so much splendor, excitement and growing in this first year it is a river worth taking paddle on! In the Beginning There Was Simply A Dream of Having Private Practice The end of the first full month of offering a part time private practice has been a time of great reflection for me. I have slowly been putting together a video conferencing studio and a separate office to prepare clinical notes and resources for clients. I confess I have learned a lot by trial and error and continuously make changes in the moment. I initially thought I could use by basement as my televid...Continue reading
