The Avian and Exotics Service is currently investigating minimally invasive ovariectomy (spay) in rabbits. At the end of the initial stage of this research, the rabbits will be up for adoption (in about 2 weeks). We have 3 rabbits left that are free to a good home. They are female New Zealand White rabbits of about 4-6 months of age and already spayed. Please let us know in the comments if anyone is interested.

VETERINARY STUDENTS - EXTERNSHIP AT DUBAI FALCON HOSPITAL The externship at Dubai Falcon Hospital emphasizes clinical training in basic and advanced principles of falcon medicine and surgery for final year students & postgraduate vets. Furthermore there will be opportunity to participate in the veterinary care of our associated captive wildlife collection. The clinical work is approximately distributed as follows: 65% avian (50% falcon/raptor, 15% other avian: bustards, st...one curlew, pigeons, waterfowl, pheasants, cranes, parrots and ratites) and 35% mammals (oryx, gazelles, cheetah, miscellaneous wildlife, dogs, cats). The majority of work with mammalian species will take place in the premises of Wadi al Safa Wildlife Centre and the on-site wildlife clinic. The Wildlife Centre consists of two separate parks, each located about 30 minutes (by car) from Dubai Falcon Hospital. The extern will work under the supervision of the veterinarians at the hospital (Dr A. di Somma, Dr P. Azmanis, Dr A. Jawad) and in the Wildlife Centre (Dr A. Nielsen). Externs will be responsible for (1) participating in the day to day medical service of the in-patients and out-patients; (2) inputting and analysis of clinical data into the computer system; (3) assisting senior technicians in providing emergency weekend and night-time care for any hospitalised animals; (4) presenting one 30 minute seminar on a case (avian or mammalian) seen during the externship, or a relevant review topic A typical day starts between 7.30-8.00 AM. Out-patient visit time is from 8 AM -2 PM and if there are no emergency cases the intern will usually finish work no later than 4.30 PM. The extern will learn how to deal with falcon clinical cases, how to collect diagnostic samples & perform necropsies. The hospital has an in-house laboratory and it will be possible to learn the basics of avian haematology, biochemistry and microbiology. Dependent on the capability of the extern, he/she will also get the opportunity to conduct avian endoscopy. Planned procedures in the captive wildlife collection depends highly on the season (vaccination, trauma cases, translocations). The extern should expect some afternoons without patients where the extern will work on a presentation and/or a research project. There will be opportunities to participate in clinical research. Subsequent publication in peer-review scientific journals or other veterinary periodicals would be anticipated. The extern will be provided with on-site (Dubai Falcon Hospital) accommodation and food. Travel arrangements and health insurance are the responsibility of the externs. No tuition fee is requested. For further contact and application send CVs and intention letter: Dr Panos Azmanis (coordinating vet) DVM, Dr.med.vet, Dip ECZM (avian) [email protected]

For veterinarians and veterinary students: The exotic pet specialty working group of the European College of Zoological Medicine is seeking feedback from the veterinary profession regarding the nature of first-opinion and referral/specialist exotic animal practice (companion zoological animal practice). If you or your practice/service sees exotic pet species we would really value for opinion.... This short survey is open to veterinary students, general veterinary practitioners, exotic animal practitioners, and recognized specialists that see exotic pet species, and will only take 5 MINUTES TO COMPLETE. The survey will only be open for the next 3 weeks and closes on March 15th. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JQ8MQC6

We also treat spiders!! A Chaco Golden Knee (Grammostola pulchripes) was seen in the Avian and Exotics Service this week. We actually can listen to their heart using a Doppler unit placed on top of the opisthosoma (lower abdomen). On this video, the heart can be heard beating (the hear rate is quite low in spiders).
