When I wrote job descriptions for the new crew members this year, Graham and Sylvia had me include 'shoveling' no less than three times. It seemed... excessive. They confidently assured me that to be a rammed earth builder, you need to know how to wield a shovel, how to use a shovel, and how to love, like, or at least tolerate shoveling. Here's why. Each lift ( the horizontal sections you can see on a wall) is a mixture that is put into our forms by ... you guessed it... sho...veling it in. This allows us to control the final appearance of every single lift, including those gorgeous waves of colour that flow across rammed earth. I get it now. A sneak peak of our walls being unformed in Mulmur! They're still drying off, but those gorgeous colour tones and lift waves are still shining. Every one of our clients decides on the hues they want in their walls. We use iron oxides to create some shades, and the local earth does the rest.
