Menstrual Hygiene Day 28 May #ItsTimeForAction #MHDay2021 How many of you still do remember the toilet paper crisis in America last year in the beginning of p...andemic? I certainly do and returned with houseplant instead of buying the toilet paper from the store as I couldn't deal with the crowd and shortage Lack of access to period friendly infrastructure and resources are what women and girls around the developing countries intensely go through every month like the toilet paper crisis. Periods continuing during the pandemic, it simply do not stop for the pandemics, right? The current pandemic highlights and further exacerbates the menstruation-related challenges many women and girls face around the world. Closed schools and community centers disrupted access to information about menstruation where women and girls usually get informed. Lockdowns intensified the impact of household level taboos and stigmas. Often confined space cause shame and discomfort in managing period. The economic impact of pandemic forces to prioritize other basic needs over safe menstrual products at household level. Female healthcare workers and patients cannot manage their period adequately in healthcare facilities because of poor water and sanitation infrastructure. Each day, an estimated 300 million women and girls menstruate. Being able to manage menstruation hygienically with confidence and with dignity is critical for their health, education, human rights, economic development, and overall gender equality. Every woman should be able to make informed decisions about her menstrual health and hygiene, and boys/men to be educated about periods. Every woman and girl to be able to experience her menstruation as a normal fact of life and not anything to be ashamed of. Together progresses have been made towards ending period stigma over the last few years. BUT PROGRESS IS TOO SLOW. To end the period related stigma, step up our actions and investment now on period friendly infrastructure. We must ensure that no one leave behind all girls, women and people who are homeless, migrants or living in emergency situations as well as people with disabilities menstruate. Various events being organized today globally to minimize skill gaps to address menstrual hygiene needs.
