It was an honour for the Afghan-Canadian Lawyers' Association team members to meet her Excellency, Shinkai Karokhail, the new Ambassador of Afghanistan to Canada at yesterday's welcome reception. A very inspiring female leader. Shinkai Karokhail is a renowned women’s rights activist and an active elected Member of the Afghan Parliament. As a founding member of the Afghan Women’s Educational Center (AWEC) she worked as a volunteer and then as director promoting children’s righ...ts and women’s education and empowerment. Shinkai is also founder and coordinator of the Afghan Civil Society Forum and the Parliamentarian Network for women. During her six-year parliamentary career she has been vocal on issues of justice and human and women’s rights and has played a key role in promoting the Elimination of Violence against Women bill and the National Plan of Action for Women in Afghanistan as well as assisting gender reform in the Shiite Personal Status law.

Dear friends, Sadly, Moria Camp for Syrian, Afghan and many other refugees in the island of Lesbos, Greece has been burned down. Arzo Wardak has been volunteering at the camp and has witnessed that "Greek police were beating innocent people. Shots were being fired. Women were desperately running out in front of cars. Children were calling colleagues telling them their families were on fire." It is estimated that 4000 people have been displaced in Lesbos so far. Urgent help is... needed from the international community. Please donate to those in need by contacting Arzo at [email protected]. Arzo jan, we support your brave efforts and thank you for all you are doing on the ground. Attached below is Arzo's original post. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1098473820206135&set=a.165575330162660.42705.100001305815239&type=3&theater

A huge suicide bomb ripped through a secure area of Kabul at the height of the Wednesday morning rush hour, killing at least 100 people and wounding 600, a source from the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) reported on Thursday (June 1, 2017). The victims' families have been impacted by this devastating act and are in need of urgent help during this difficult time. Those who have lost their sole breadwinner are in an especially vulnerable position given their lack of financial... support, so our fundraiser will be focusing on this initiative. With the money raised, we will financially support as many families as possible to sustain them for a few months until they figure out how to stand on their own feet again. NOTE: We are being directly connected to the families of the victims affected the most. 100% of all donations will go to the victims. Updates will be provided accordingly. We have also organized a vigil that will take place at Queens Park (Downtown Toronto) for Sunday, June 4th at 6-7pm.

We need your support this coming Sunday! On May 31st, the heart of Kabul city got hit with its deadliest bomb attack since 2001. During rush hour in Ramadan, a large water tanker was detonated in the high security green zone of the diplomatic district. This Sunday, ACLA will be one of the organizations who will be showing their support for the efforts of young Afghan-Canadian women organizing a Vigil at 6 pm in Queen's Park. We ask you to join the Afghan community in a time of mourning for the victims, survivors and their loved ones, and in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan.

An adhoc group of volunteer lawyers (and articling students) across Canada are working with the CCLA, CARL, and the Refugee Hub to support the ACLU by having volunteers at airports to assist travelers affected by Trump's EO on immigration. YYZ and YOW are among airports where more help is needed. If you are a lawyer/articling student and would like to help, please sign up here:
