We remember the brutal tragedy that was the Sumgait Pogrom 33 years ago. After last year’s Artsakh War it is easy to see how hindsight is 20/20. The pogrom wasn’t an isolated event, but a precursor to sustained anti-Armenian attitude and action.

The gentle, yet bold "Armenian Mother" monument created by sculptor Vigen Avetis depicts an image of a mother who protects her children in the four corners of the world. This statue is dedicated to the centenary of the Armenian Genocide and is currently exhibited in front of the Municipality of Cavriglia in Tuscany. The monument has a placid nature reminding us of those we have lost and stands as a symbol of protection and strength to Armenians around the globe. https://en.armradio.am/.../monument-dedicated-to.../
31 years after the Baku Pogroms, we remember the hundreds of Armenians who suffered this ethnic violence, and the hundreds of thousands more displaced by this hatred. From January 12-19, 1990, a planned campaign of terror unleashed on the Armenian citizens of Azerbaijan’s capital city effectively put an end to a vibrant and storied diaspora community. It seems that what is not condemned is repeated.
For the first time in almost a century, an old Soviet border is taking on a very new meaning. Never intended as an international border, what is officially being demarcated in Armenia’s southern province of Syunik is now cutting through settlements and key roads, namely the highway connecting Goris and Kapan. Flanked by a hostile Azerbaijan on both sides, residents anticipate the worst, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.

There’s always music, and in music, there’s always hope, says Creative Armenia AGBU Fellow Zela Margossian who shared her jazz composition entitled Ceasefire with the world last fall, just when Armenians needed a ceasefire the most. Originally from Lebanon, she then moved to Armenia and is currently pursuing her passions in Sydney, Australia. Check out her work in this profile for The Sydney Morning Herald from the fall.
