Today, October 1st, is International Day of Older Persons, a time to honour, value and appreciate the life experiences, and wisdom of older persons and to acknowledge and thank those who contribute to our vibrant communities across Halton region.
Because of the residential school system and other colonial practices, many Indigenous peoples did not grow up with their culture or their language, thereby interrupting the transmission of knowledge from parent to child, Elder to child. Today, on this first #TruthAndReconciliationDay, Community Development Halton asks you to take the time to learn more about how the lived experiences, perspectives, and languages of Indigenous people have been excluded from the national narrative. Today is a day for education. #OrangeShirtDay #ReflectThenAct #EveryChildMatters https://cdhalton.ca/2021/09/28/orange-shirt-day/
Today is the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is also the eighth year that September 30 is recognized as Orange Shirt Day. Created as an observance in 2013, it serves as a day to educate people and promote awareness about the Indian residential school system and the impact it has had on Indigenous communities for almost two centuries. #OrangeShirtDay was inspired by the story of survivor Phyllis (Jack) Webstad #ReflectThenAct #TruthAndReconciliationDay #EveryChildMatters
Today, September 30, Community Development Halton, Volunteer Halton and Age-Friendly Halton staff takes time to reflect on the importance of this being the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This is a day of education and reflection. Between 1831 and 1996, the federal government forcibly removed more than 150,000 First Nation, Inuit, and Métis children from their families and sent them to residential schools far from their homes. This was done against the wishes... of families and without consent. We are grateful for the advocacy, resilience, and determination of Indigenous people who have fought for decades to have their truth heard and recognized; for too many years, Canadian society failed to listen to survivors and believe their stories. #OrangeShirtDay #ReflectThenAct #TruthAndReconciliationDay #EveryChildMatters https://cdhalton.ca/2021/09/28/orange-shirt-day/ See more
