The Exodus Urban sprawl continues, with Toronto and Montréal both experiencing record-high population losses to surrounding areas More people are opting to live outside of Canada's largest urban centres, which is contributing to ongoing urban sprawl.... Population growth in CMAs slowed between July 1, 2019, and July 1, 2020 (+1.3% vs +1.7% a year prior), mainly because of a sharp decrease in international migration following COVID-19 travel restrictions. Fast-growing CMAs can be found across Canada, including Oshawa, Ontario (+2.1%); Halifax, Nova Scotia (+2.0%); and Kelowna, British Columbia (+1.9%). Urban sprawl continues, with peripheral municipalities often being the fastest-growing areas inside large CMAs. For example, Milton (+4.0%) and Mirabel (+3.6%) greatly outpaced the growth of their respective CMAs, Toronto (+1.4%) and Montréal (+0.7%).
