Are you knocking on wood ... You’ve likely heard the price of lumber has gone up quite a bit recently. But you might think it doesn’t affect you since you don...’t plan to do any home renovation projects. Some projects simply aren’t planned. You never know when something might happen to your home, which is why you pay for homeowners insurance. A lot of people choose their coverage when they buy their house, then never go back and review it. They just knock on wood that their coverage will take care of whatever might happen. But with lumber prices soaring, simply knocking on wood could be a costly mistake even more costly than the wood you knock on. Depending on the coverage you’ve chosen, it might not cover the increased cost in lumber (or other building materials and appliances). So here’s a friendly reminder to reach out to your insurance agent and ask whether your coverage is adequate in today's market.

In what is known as a delayed disconnect phone scam, some Calgarians have fallen victim to fraud. Starting with a call claiming to be from your bank’s fraud de...partment to advise you of suspicious charges on your credit card, you will then be instructed to hang up and immediately call the phone number on the back of your credit card to report to bank investigators. It sounds legitimate, especially after calling the actual number listed on the credit card. Unfortunately with landlines, if the other caller stays on the line they can hold it open for long periods, thus pretending to be the number just called. The scammers usually work in teams. When you pick up the phone again, they play a recorded dial tone, then pretend to answer the call after you dial. The caller will then be asked to provide personal information, allowing the scammers the opportunity to engage in further fraudulent activity, often racking up thousands of dollars in debt. To avoid falling victim to this scam, we advise Calgarians to wait a brief period of time prior to contacting their bank, and consider using a cell phone or different phone line when doing so. Also, never provide your information unless you are positive who you are speaking with, and never provide any form of money to anyone in this scenario. If you are a victim of this scam, and have lost money, please report to us at 403-266-1234. If you have not lost money, but have had this happen to you, please report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

After living in one place for a long time it’s easy to feel we will lose those memories when we move. That’s understandable. And the longer one lives in a house..., the more memories created and the more emotional it becomes. If it’s time to move to a new home though, sometimes it can be easier to have a goodbye get together (when we’re allowed...) and then focus on something positive from your new home. Remember too, that your memories live with you and your loved ones and they are coming with you! Bill Leesman 403.870.9916 #Calgaryrealtor #yycrealestate #calgaryalberta See more
