Ag in the "Field" 04.01.2021

Prince Edward Island is made up of small rural communities, the backbones of our rural communities are the many family farms. And they are HUGE contributors of economic growth and stability for our Island. Without our farm families we would see our rural communities & small businesses decline and disappear. This TED Talk explains how public trust and government support in Agriculture is critical in order to protect our communities. ... Currently on PEI, our family farms and rural communities are at risk! It’s not just a farmer problem ~ it’s an all-of-us problem All of us need to do better for the families that feed us, and our political leaders need to do more to protect our communities and small family farms! Dennis King Bloyce Thompson Peter Bevan-Baker, MLA Natalie Jameson Jamie Fox - District 19Michele Beaton, MLA

Time for everyone to support the dedicated Islanders who put food on our plates Farmers are the only group on PEI that are being singled out and denied equal access to water. As a result, Island farm families are suffering. We have been sharing with you lots of passionate young Islanders who are pursing futures in AG, and we need support them and their careers. ... We encourage everyone to send an email to our MLA's to show your support for your farming neighbours, friends, families, and our Island's next generation and future farmers.

This week, we’d like to introduce you to Kegan Ching from Red Point, PEI! Kegan is a 22 year Dalhousie Agricultural Campus student taking a Technology Diploma in Agricultural Business Management. While he is taking the year off from school due to Covid-19, he is definitely still keeping busy with his family farm. His grandfather Russell was the original founder of Russell Ching Ltd., producing and packing quality table potatoes out of Souris, a business that his father and tw...o uncles now operate. Kegan has many duties on the farm, which vary depending on the season. In the spring Kegan helps cut seed and till land in preparation for planting the crop, and performs maintenance on equipment, mowing forage cover crops, and other day to day jobs during the summer. When fall rolls around, Kegan can be found unloading trucks or running equipment in the field. When the crop is in Kegan works in their packing plant over the winter, packing and shipping their potatoes for people to enjoy. Kegan has been surrounded by agriculture his entire life, and loved farming from a young age. I always loved to be around tractors and equipment as a kid, and never grew out of it. I spent many days in a tractor cab with my dad, as well as countless weekends bagging and packing potatoes. Kegan describes a career in agriculture as a career that is very complex, and loves seeing what new ideas and technology are being implemented in the industry to improve it for the future. The long hours that come along with farming and producing food is well worth it to be able to witness the hard work put in and the satisfaction of seeing the products come out of the field at harvest. Farming for Kegan is less of a job and more of a lifestyle, and one that he is looking forward to continuing as his role grows and adapts after he graduates from school.

This week, we are thrilled to feature Ila Matheson from Springwater Farm in Albion Cross, PEI! She is 21 years old, and a student in animal and plant sciences at the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Nova Scotia. At home, Ila works as a farmer, raising sheep and making small square bales of hay. She does daily chores on the farm with their animals, and is also learning to shear sheep with a goal of becoming a sheep shearer. She has been involved in agriculture her entire life..., from being raised on a family farm, to her heavy involvement in 4H, to now pursuing an education and future in ag, and this year being named to the Canadian Agriculture Youth Council. When you have grown up in agriculture, you grow up loving agriculture. What else would I ever choose?. While agriculture may have chosen her from a young age, Ila is certainly taking her passion for the industry to the next level. Ila was recently chosen to represent PEI on the Canadian Agriculture Youth Council, a consultative body for the national Minister of Agriculture made of 25 youth from across Canada. They discuss current issues surrounding agriculture in our country, strengths and weaknesses of Canadian ag, challenges that farmers are facing, and how we can address them. Ila is a strong voice for agriculture in our province, but also for youth and young farmers in our country. Ila loves to work with the land and any living creatures, and she intends to continue this as she looks forward to graduating and the next steps in her life. Her goal is to be an integral part of her family farm operations and its future, as well as to continue to learn and become a sheep shearer. She has high hopes for the future of agriculture in our country, and encourages all youth to be involved; the agriculture industry needs young people to continue to thrive in Canada, and there are endless opportunities and for our bright young minds. #sheep #farmer #farmher #youth #shearing #PEI #GenAG #AgInTheField #students #agriculture #agyouthcouncil
