Last week's OPU collection had a group of 3 pregnant heifers come through the chute. Together they produced 44 oocytes to send off for fertilization. Yesterday's incubator came back with 11 fresh embryos for implanting and another 10 embryos frozen at Boviteq. #browncowsrock #thearcservices #agwestvet #ladyivfvet #futurejersey #ivfvets #dairycows #cowreproduction #cowvet
Check out the article that Progressive Dairy published on Dr. Lisa's presentation at the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar. It is among their Top 25 most well-read U.S. edition articles of the year. Dr. Lisa will be presenting this topic again at the National Dairy Producers of the U.S. virtual meeting at the end of the month

Who’s donated blood? Donating blood isn’t just for people! This cow cut her leg over night and lost a significant amount of blood. Her hematocrit was 0.14 (normal range is 0.25 - 0.37), very anemic! The timely administration of a blood transfusion in cases of life-threatening anaemia in cattle is relatively simple and clinically very rewarding. The whole procedure takes about 60 to 90 minutes and, at a cost to the farmer that is economically justifiable. This cow will recover quickly thanks to her herd mate who donated today. #vetmedicine #cowvet #cows #farm365 #medicine #veterinarian #dvm #donateblood #farmvet
38 day Holstein twins. If you look, it’s already easy to see their head, body and stubby legs. The heart beat is remarkable to watch! A large part of a farm vet’s day is spent ultrasounding uteruses and ovaries - ensuring they cows and horses are fertile and able to conceive and then confirming pregnancies. For dairy cows, we generally ultrasound at 28-42 days post breeding to look for pregnancies. In addition to confirming the pregnancy, we are looking for a heart beat to confirm that the fetus is alive, and counting the number of fetuses as twins are not uncommon (~1% of pregnancies). We generally do a second ultrasound between 2-3 months gestation to confirm the pregnancy and to see if they are heifer or bull fetuses.
We’re up before dawn working with farmers. One of the perks of being a farm vet - seeing the beautiful fall sunrise!

Does Your Horse Have The Squirts? Kwantlen Polytechnic University, in partnership with Agwest Veterinary Group, is investigating the cause of the squirts in horses in the Fraser Valley by evaluating the difference in the bacterial populations in the gastrointestinal tracts of horses with normal manure and those with chronic diarrhea. Many horses in this geographical area are affected with so-called Free Fecal Water, in which an otherwise healthy horse passes liquid stool... in addition to normal manure. As owners of these horses can attest, this is a frustrating and messy problem! We hope that by characterizing the microbiome of horses with this condition, we will be one step further to figuring out how to best treat it. If your horse struggles with Free Fecal Water, please give us a call (604-826-5089) or email ([email protected]) as we are collecting manure samples from affected horses for our research project. Your horse will receive a complimentary physical exam at the time of manure sampling!

For a pregnant cow, just lying down and getting up can be a dangerous manoeuvre. As she drops her front end to lie down or lifts her hind end to rise, her uterus is temporarily suspended in a precarious position. A sudden fall or slip at that moment can cause the uterus to twist on its long axis - this is a uterine torsion. Uterine torsion occurs most commonly in cows in the last stage of pregnancy. Abdominal pain is the first identifiable sign of a uterine torsion. The cow ...may show signs such as lack of appetite, constipation, depressed rumen contractions, rapid pulse, restlessness, treading and tail switching. Farmers that are observant and in-tune with their cows will recognize that something just isn’t right and that stage one labour isn’t proceeding as it normally does. A quick call to the farm veterinarian will ensure a live calf is delivered with minimal complications to the cow. Often, uterine torsions can be corrected and the calf can be delivered vaginally but occasionally a C-section is required. #calving #farmvet #veterinarian #obstetrics #calf #farming #farm365
