A Home for Hooves Farm Sanctuary 05.01.2021

This evening, Penny thought it would be a great idea to fly onto my back from her roost. She found the perfect opportunity while I was bent over pushing down the plunger while I tube fed Harriet. I was able to finish feeding Harriet and put her on the ground while I tried in vain to get Penny off my back safely. Needless to say I got a pretty good laugh!

Update: Sponsored We have another lady who joined us at the farm today; a Muscovy duck who we are calling Chelsea. Her previous name was "Cheese", her partner's name was "Quackers" so Cheese and Quackers, but sadly her sister was killed by an owl. We have welcomed her to the Sanctuary so she's not alone. We've only known her for a few hours but she is an absolute sweetheart! Chelsea will be in quarantine for 30 days to allow us sufficient time to deworm her and ensure she...'s healthy. Once she's out of quarantine she will be joining our garden ducks. We are also looking for a sponsor for her which is $15/month. If you would like to sponsor her please send us a PM. Monthly sponsorship's are eligible for a tax receipt. Be kind to every kind. Twitch.TV/homeforhooves Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.

Muscovy's are such curious little beings. This space is "new" as it's now the living quarters for our special needs birds. Anytime I'm in there they waddle over, taking up the opportunity to come in and explore!

Update on Henrietta. She is almost out of quarantine and is on her final regimen of dewormer. Due to her unknown history and Peafowl being known for having several types of internal worms we had to treat her with two different types of medication. These could not be given together and required two doses of each that were two weeks apart. She is doing very well and will soon join our garden birds. If you've never heard a Peahen call I suggest you YouTube it because it is ...quite an unexpected and loud sound! Be kind to every kind. We have been unsuccessful in treating AJ's bumblefoot infection here at the Sanctuary so we will be heading to the Mill Bay Veterinary Hospital on Friday. Fortunately it doesn't seem to be bothering her and she is carrying on with her daily activities with her usual gusto for life! Be kind to every kind. Penny is doing fantastic! Geoff isn't quite sure how she managed to perch on the towel rack but she's clearly feeling really well. Animals are incredibly resilient and it's hard to believe she had major surgery last week!

I've gotta say pig snouts are insanely cute! But did you know that pigs can use odor from urine and the facial glands to identify other pigs, and even pigs who are unable to see are able to recognize other individuals in their group, indicating the strength of their other senses.

I have to say that I am incredibly excited about our 2021 calendar! Our volunteer graphic designer, Samantha from Paul Design, outdid herself on the overall design, Andrew Hill contributed his astounding photography, and Kirsti showcased her witty writing skills. It includes all our animal's rescue anniversaries and world wide animal celebration dates. It takes a village to run a Sanctuary and I'm really lucky to have the people I do in mine!... If you haven't ordered yours yet you can do so here https://www.etsy.com//868/2021-calendar-a-home-for-hooves If you're part of our incredible donor family yours will be arriving in the mail in a few short weeks.

It's going to be a "batten down the hatches" kind of day today as we are expecting 90km/h winds. Wind is definitely the most stressful and worrisome weather condition we experience due to the fear of trees coming down.......

Education Monday. Social Media Volunteer Allison B. When the egg hatches and chicks are born, they join their mother to look for water and food. They already know the voice of their mother through communicating while they were still in their eggs so they know to follow her. They clean their feathers and dust bath as well. They are smart creatures and stay together so they can survive. The chicks normally stay close with their mother from 4-8 weeks and sleep under her wings for safety and comfort. The mother hen will know when the chicks are ready to explore on their own and be independent, which is usually around 4 weeks.

Education Monday Allison B Cows are amazing, cute and sweet creatures and there are so many reasons to love them! Here are a few facts about cows: Cows make life long bonds and friendships with fellow cows, animals and humans. ... Cows bond with humans who have rescued them. Their life expectancy is up to 20 years. They remember faces of humans who treated them poorly and have great long term memories. They love to have fun and sometimes even play fetch.

Our boy Buddy always struggles to keep weight on in the colder months so he's on a special feed called Calf Manna to help him maintain his weight. And he always gets a whole bunch on his little nose. It's incredibly difficult to get a picture because he insists on climbing up my chest thinking I have more. We'll also be getting him a jacket for this winter to help him keep his body temp up as well.

It's an exciting day today! We're insulating our feed shed so we don't freeze our buns off during feeding time this winter:)
