The Canadian AIDS Society, in collaboration with local and regional community-based organizations across Canada, is pleased to launch national HIV Testing Week in Canada, taking place from November 23-30, 2020. In a 2020 report released by the Public Health Agency of Canada, it revealed the number of new HIV cases increased by 25.3% over a span of four years. After fun...ding cuts were made in 2016, despite warnings to government officials, it led to rising HIV rates across the country, setting Canada further back when compared to other G7 nations. In addition to funding cuts, HIV self-testing kits are currently available in France, U.S., U.K., among others, but are not yet available in Canada. We expect the approval of HIV self-tests to come within the next several weeks which will drastically influence our goal of eradicating HIV in Canada within the next five years. Nouveau projet ! WETS! Tu veux en savoir plus? Appelle nous!
Today, over two dozen organizations appeal directly to Justin Trudeau, Patty Hajdu, Dr. Graham Sher (CEO, Canadian Blood Services) and Nathalie Fagnan (CEO, Hém...a-Québec). After months of campaigning and 10,000 letters sent to Ottawa, we're now urging federal leaders to finally take accountability. It's time to adopt new blood donation policies based on science, not discrimination. We're in the second wave of a pandemic that will require Canadians to donate blood and plasma to save lives. There is a simple solution to fortify our blood supply, but our leaders are insistent in maintaining a ban on a population willing to contribute. Our message is simple: the time has come for action to end Canada's discriminatory blood donation ban. Read the letter at https://allbloodisequal.ca/open-letter. #AllBloodIsEqual
