In lest we forget ... The poppy is the enduring symbol of #RemembranceDay of the World War One, thanks in large part to Canadian doctor John McCrae. Poppies were a common sight, they flourished in the soil where fighting and shelling occurred. The flower provided Dr. McCrae with inspiration for his poem 'In Flanders Fields', which he wrote while serving in Ypres in 1915. In 1918, in response to McCrae's poem, American Moina Michael wrote 'And now the Torch and Poppy Red, we w...ear in honor of our dead'. She campaigned to make the poppy a symbol of remembrance of those who had died in the war. In 1921, artificial poppies were first sold in Britain to raise money to raise money for the Earl Haig Fund in support of ex-servicemen and the families of those who had died in the conflict. They were supplied by Anna Guérin, who had been manufacturing the flowers in France to raise money for war orphans. Selling poppies proved so popular that in 1922 the British Legion founded a factory - staffed by disabled ex-servicemen - to produce its own. The poppy continues to be sold globally to raise money for those who put their lives at risk for our freedom and safety. With the third-largest reserve in the world, the province of Alberta contains an estimated 173 billion barrels of accessible crude oil, buried under the Boreal forest. Alberta is in the fortunate position to be the managers of so much of the world’s riches. Extracting the bitumen from deep underground the Boreal forest has brought valuable resources to Canadians in the form of jobs, government royalties, taxes and transfer payments. However, there is a cost to pay for those r...iches and the cost is what the extraction process does to the land. In the past several years Alberta oil producers along with the provincial and federal government have done an excellent job of ensuring the land is repaid for the resources it takes. This repayment process is called Land Reclamation. The coronavirus pandemic has hit the world economy harder than any event since World War 2, and it’s expected to have a lasting impact on energy demand. The enormity of the shock caused by the Covid-19 is prompting governments around the world to develop economic recovery plans that will shape infrastructure and industries for decades. There is a very strong case for the energy sector to play a crucial role in these plans. As governments have shuttered businesses and restrict...ed the freedom of movement for billions of people, consumption of oil, gas and power of course has fallen. The spread of COVID-19 has caused major disruptions in both the global financial and commodity markets, as well as the oil and gas industry in general. Our Question is this? How will the Canadian energy industry emerge in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic? Read more here ...https://aimlandservices.com/crude-oil-falls-in-wake-of-low-

Most of the demand globally where the growth is happening is actually on the heavy oil side. says Phil Skolnick, analyst with Eight Capital The reality is, our economy will need to restart. And all the parts of the economy will need to restart for us to be able to recover out of this. And that includes the oil and gas sector, which is a major part of our economy, says Kevin Birn, vice-president of North American crude oil markets with IHS Markit. As many Canadians know, t...he oil and gas industry is one of the country’s largest economic sectors. It has a long track record of driving Canada’s economy. The energy sector generated $359 billion in federal and provincial revenues between 2000 and 2018. And it can do so again, with production of safe, reliable, secure, and affordable oil and gas, rooted in world-leading environmental practices. The oil and gas sector supports more than 500,000 jobs across Canada in direct and related industries. Canada’s Indigenous nations are looking forward to benefiting from the growth in this sector. More specifically the vast majority, 120 of 129 First Nations support the expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline. Read more here ... https://aimlandservices.com/the-canadian-energy-sector-is-e

The opportunity for the large-scale production of Blue Hydrogen to fuel our homes is particularly relevant to Albertans, given the dramatic collapse of the province’s energy sector. Recent pilot projects have demonstrated that carbon capture and storage facilities linked to natural gas reforming processes can yield energy-grade, emission-free hydrogen equivalent to half the wholesale cost of diesel, and a third the cost of hydrogen produced using electrolysis (Green Hydrogen).... Realistically, once a hydrogen pipeline infrastructure is in place, we will be one step closer to having a viable low-carbon energy source to fuel our homes. Canada’s oil production is recovering faster than expected amid rapid global demand rebound. The bounce in demand for oil is expected to outstrip the ability of producers to restore supply, says Amrita Sen of Energy Aspects. Analyst are suggesting that world oil demand has bounced back much faster than expected and is now at 89% of pre-COVID levels.... Canada’s oil producers are already better positioned than their competitors in the United States to capitalize on demand recovery. US oil producers ramped down in March due to COVID-19 and production has continued to decline as of mid-August. The steep decline rates for [U.S.] shale require constant drilling and completion activity, and it will take a while to get production back to pre-pandemic levels. says Elisabeth Murphy, analyst with ESAI Energy. Some estimate as many as 70% of US shale producers will go out of business before this is over. Daniel Yergin says, "US shale is in a sort of death pageant, and will probably remain that way for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile in Canada, oil sands or heavy oil production is already well into coming back online as producers capitalize on their unique ability to swiftly respond to stabilizing oil prices. Engineers in Calgary are testing a method of extracting hydrogen from underground resources like the Bitumen while leaving the carbon emissions it produces below the surface. "It's about making use of oil and gas reservoirs to get pure, clean energy." said professor Ian Gates, of U of Calgary's Schulich School of Engineering. Hydrogen is being viewed as an extremely viable option for an emissions free energy. Hydrogen run vehicles are seen as having a longer range than electr...ic battery vehicles and have no tailpipe emissions - just water. Through lab work and small-scale field testing, researchers found by injecting oxygen into oil and gas fields it raises the temperature, which creates a reaction that frees the hydrogen. The patented technology owned by Proton Technologies was developed between Ian Gates and Jacky Wang of the University of Calgary and Proton Technologies Inc., of Calgary. "Envision the reservoir as a hot, bubbling mix of oil, with a fraction of it combusting," Gates said, "as it's doing so, it keeps producing more and more hydrogen as a consequence of its reactions." China, Japan and South Korea have big plans to put millions of hydrogen-powered vehicles on their roads in the coming decade. A clear sign there is a future for Alberta's Hydrogen Industry.

The ability to analyze one relative to another is very powerful. - Jack Dangermond, president of Esri. As the world undergoes rapid transformation, the need for using GIS is profound because of it's ability to get better data to decision makers at incredible speeds. It's particularly useful for companies whose assets span great distances that require large scale people and resource management.... The Oil and Gas industry has rapidly adopted GIS because it's an industry that's 80% driven by spacial data. This data is used at every stage of the life-cycle, beginning with analysis and exploration, through appraisal and production, right up to the abandonment phase. Companies are beginning to understand the importance of spacial data to maximize ROI as well as minimize risks because it ensures that strategic business decisions are data driven, leading to much better results and meeting objectives quicker and at a lower cost. It is particularly effective in automating workflows and refining labour processes by finding faster routes, less troublesome and safer designated areas as well as identifying and mitigating risks ahead of time. GIS is helping Alberta Oil and Gas companies compete in the global race of unlocking new energy sources while maximizing value from its assets. How was the transition to working from home? Was it hard on you or your family? "The transition to working from home went surprisingly well. I was impressed how easy everyone adapted to their new working conditions. I was one of the last to leave the office on the single factor of I wasn’t sure how that transition was going to work, but now that I see the benefits and the ease of continuing business as usual I would have opted for it a lot sooner. There are definitely trying... times when your on conference calls and kids are screaming in the background however that has become our new normal that we all just roll with." What is the best part of working from home / personally and professionally? "The best part of working form home is the flexibility and balance it creates for a home/work life balance. As we all know life is extremely busy and I find that working from home gives you that little bit of flexibility that we may not normally have, such as running errands on your lunch hour or having that few extra minutes at work to finish up something you have been working on before having to run to get the kids. " How has it been to communicate with your team and clients during COVID? "I don’t think we have skipped a beat when it comes to communicating. With all the programs and apps they have available it is extremely easy to continue the daily communication that you would have in the office. My team always jokes about the amount of time we talk on the phone." ---- Thanks Lindsay!

It’s important to remember that oil demand isn’t going anywhere for a long time. Over the next 20 years, Alberta will be shipping their land-locked oil and gas to ports on the coast or to the US. We only have 2 shipping choices for long distances - rail or pipelines. Environmentalists generally don't like pipelines - but maybe they don't know the facts? Pipelines lower GHG emissions, have fewer spills and cost less to ship. A study done by University of Alberta found that pip...elines reduced emissions by 61 - 77% when shipping over long distances. Many are concerned about potential spills but 99.999% of oil and gas shipped via pipeline arrive safely to their destinations. Of the incidents that have occurred, 70% of the spills are less than 1 cubic metre.(1000 litres) and 83% occurred at facilities. However, rail, the only alternative, has GHG rates that are 50% higher, with much more invasive spill rates. According to the study author, Amit Kumar, of U of A, there are 8x greater costs in accidents and spills when shipping by rail. There are also 4.5x more incidents than pipelines. The debate is over, pipelines are the best option when shipping Alberta's Oil and Gas over long distances.

It came out of nowhere, no one saw it coming a global pandemic causing major world-wide lockdowns including the world’s top two oil consumers, China and the United States. At the same time an oil price war erupted between two of the world’s largest oil producers, and to make matters worse there was a supply surge from US shale producers.
