Canines , eye-teeth , cuspids...what’s the difference? Actually these are all terms for the same tooth . You have 4 canine teeth, 2 in your upper jaw and 2 in your lower jaw. The canines with their more pointed shape help you grip and pierce food as you bite. In dentistry, we look at the canines for guidance of your bite; where the back teeth don’t contact when the jaw is slid to the side. So it is no wonder why these teeth are so important! This patient came ...in with her upper right canine that had been stuck in this position for over 10 years. She had decided it was time for her to get it aligned properly for esthetics and proper function. We decided to treat her using braces and in less than a year we were able to accomplish these goals. Isn’t she lovely? Let’s welcome Savannah to the braces free club! A quick snapshot today from the removal of her braces and immediately into #vivera retainers. It only took 18 months (with an unfortunate 3 month Covid break) to achieve this killer smile Special shout out to our awesome and talented ortho assistant Jean for helping Savannah achieve this amazing outcome. We see you smiling behind that mask too!!!

Makeover Monday!!! I hate my buck teeth! was her chief concern 18 months ago. But today, this 14 yr old is not hiding behind her mask ! Buck teeth usually refers to two different dental conditions that we call overjet (excessive) and overbite (deep)... Overjet is the measurement of how much the upper front teeth protrude forward in relation to the lower front teeth. Normal overjet is considered to be 2-3mm. In her case, it was 10mm Overbite refers to the vertical overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth. An ideal overbite is 20-30%. In this case it was 100% We corrected these issues with her overbite and overjet with a combination of braces and elastics. The importance of starting her treatment at a young age was paramount because if ignored til she was older, we may have needed jaw surgery for this correction. We always treat every case as comprehensively as possible, but try to use the most conservative means. We are so proud of her outcome as it has improved the overall health of her mouth, increased her self-esteem and confidence in her smile! See more

Monday Makeover - not all makeovers are for cosmetic reasons We always treat function before esthetics. This ultimately gives us the best and long lasting results. Jamie came to us originally because she had severe TMJ pain and clicking in her jaw that was limiting her ability to open her jaw and eat hard foods (in dental need talk - disc displacement with reduction) A consult revealed that her bite was too deep (as you don’t see her lower teeth when she bites d...own together) We decided to do orthodontics to reposition her jaw to alleviate the pain and the bonus was that she would be able to get straighter teeth in the process. Fast forward 18 months, her jaw pain and headaches are gone. The pain that was once so debilitating had been resolved. Notice when she bites you can now see her lower teeth and her overall alignment is much improved. We’ve achieved all our functional goals. Jamie was very pleased, but with her wedding coming up she really wanted to put on the finishing touches and sparkle Although things were straight, her front teeth had worn down from her previous deep bite. We decided to do some whitening and anterior crowns to give her the esthetics and balance she was looking for. She can’t stop smiling now and we know she is going to be stunning on her special day. Congratulations from all your friends @airdriespringsdental Special thanks to @unice_dental_art for the beautiful porcelain work. @ Airdrie, Alberta See more
