Once again, a campaign of misinformation has been launched to imply that Alberta has somehow eliminated the rigorous regulatory process all energy projects must... go through and comply with. This is a complete myth. Coal development (as with ALL resources in our province) continues to be regulated by the Alberta Energy Regulator and companies must adhere to strict rules around land reclamation and environmental effects -- these are facts. The environment, including our headwaters, remains protected by the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act -- that is a fact. Alberta continues to have the most robust environmental and social regulatory process and our government is ahead of schedule on our commitment to phase out thermal coal by 2030. Responsibly developed Alberta energy is foundational to our province and our country at large and we will continue to have among the highest environmental social and governance in the world -- this too is a fact. Albertans have every right to expect that people in positions of public trust be held to a higher standard of conduct during the COVID-19 pandemic. Millions of... Albertans have made real sacrifices over the past 10 months to help keep each other safe. They are right to be angry about people in positions of leadership vacationing outside of the country. Last Friday, I took responsibility for not having been clear enough with members of the government caucus and others in positions of leadership that they should not travel abroad. Over the weekend, I have listened to Albertans who are sending a clear message that they want real consequences for these actions. That is why I have accepted the resignation of Municipal Affairs Minister Tracy Allard and have asked my Chief of Staff Jamie Huckabay to step down, which he has done. I have also accepted the resignation of MLA Jeremy Nixon as Parliamentary Secretary for Civil Society and MLA Jason Stephan from Treasury Board. They as well as MLAs Tanya Fir, Pat Rehn, and Tany Yao have lost their Legislature committee responsibilities. By travelling abroad over the holidays, these individuals demonstrated extremely poor judgment. Transportation Minister Ric McIver will serve as interim Minister of Municipal Affairs, and my Principal Secretary Larry Kaumeyer will serve as interim Chief of Staff.

I know there are many who wish there were no restrictions in place right now. I know I wish we could be there as well. But these measures are about one thing an...d one thing only: protecting our healthcare system so that people get the urgent care they need. Every patient waiting for a delayed surgery, sometimes life-saving surgery, suffers when ICUs and hospitals are filled up. I know with these measures, Albertans will act together to stop the spike and protect one another.

Some have been eager to call for lockdowns of businesses in response to rising COVID-19 cases - something we avoided today with our targeted measures. I would a...sk those with guaranteed paycheques, particularly government paycheques, to think for a moment about the Albertans whose entire life savings are tied up in their businesses, and consider what a lockdown would do their dreams, their futures, and their livelihoods. In the spring, I believe we made a stupid mistake by imposing restrictions that tilted the playing field by keeping big box stores open, while closing our small... businesses. For that, I apologize. With these carefully targeted measures to slow the spread, we will not make that same mistake again.
