Holidays can be such a difficult time for people experiencing grief due to the loss of a loved one, especially if it’s the first year without that family member or friend.
Every year in Airdrie, the Tree of Hope is lit in memory of those we have lost and to offer support to those in need. It is a symbol of hope for those who are grieving. For the past 7 years, the Tree of Hope has been lit during a community service at the opening of the Airdrie Festival of Lights. This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the tree was lit in a virtual service and we have created this video to offer comfort to our community as we remember our loved ones and offer hope to one another at a distance. We are still accepting pledges until the end of December. Visit bit.ly/3njTHXw to make a memorial gift and be sure to include your loved one’s name in the appropriate field. Your loved one’s name will be added to the the virtual Tree of Hope at www.airdriehospice.ca/tree-of-hope-2020 within a few days.

The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing many of us to change the way we go about our daily lives. With those changes, some of us are experiencing a wave of losses: economic, social, physical and emotional. For some, these losses may build up and lead to feelings of grief. Why is it important to accept and allow these feelings? Only by acknowledging the grief we’re going through can we take steps to heal.
Each teen’s grieving experience is unique. Grieving is a different experience for each person. Teens grieve for different lengths of time and express a wide spectrum of emotions. Grief is best understood as a process in which bodily sensations, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors surface in response to the death, its circumstances, the past relationship with the deceased and the realization of the future without the person. For example, sadness and crying may be an expression of grief for one teen, while another may respond with humor and laughter.
