Classy, Dedicated, simply a professional... Last week one of our longest tenured team members @mccbeeg decided it was time to hang up her scrubs after years with Airdrie Springs Dental and take early retirement. If you had the pleasure to meet Bev you would always be greeted with a smile , and her hard work and optimism were infectious. She was not only Dr. Thorsen’s assistant but an integral part in the growth of the clinic from its early days. To one of the bes...t people who have worked at this office, we are sad to see you go, but wishing you all the best in this new stage of your life! P.S. - We’ll miss all your baked treats ! Don’t forget about us, we might just waste away!!! See more

Canines , eye-teeth , cuspids...what’s the difference? Actually these are all terms for the same tooth . You have 4 canine teeth, 2 in your upper jaw and 2 in your lower jaw. The canines with their more pointed shape help you grip and pierce food as you bite. In dentistry, we look at the canines for guidance of your bite; where the back teeth don’t contact when the jaw is slid to the side. So it is no wonder why these teeth are so important! This patient came ...in with her upper right canine that had been stuck in this position for over 10 years. She had decided it was time for her to get it aligned properly for esthetics and proper function. We decided to treat her using braces and in less than a year we were able to accomplish these goals. Isn’t she lovely? Let’s welcome Savannah to the braces free club! A quick snapshot today from the removal of her braces and immediately into #vivera retainers. It only took 18 months (with an unfortunate 3 month Covid break) to achieve this killer smile Special shout out to our awesome and talented ortho assistant Jean for helping Savannah achieve this amazing outcome. We see you smiling behind that mask too!!!

Makeover Monday!!! I hate my buck teeth! was her chief concern 18 months ago. But today, this 14 yr old is not hiding behind her mask ! Buck teeth usually refers to two different dental conditions that we call overjet (excessive) and overbite (deep)... Overjet is the measurement of how much the upper front teeth protrude forward in relation to the lower front teeth. Normal overjet is considered to be 2-3mm. In her case, it was 10mm Overbite refers to the vertical overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth. An ideal overbite is 20-30%. In this case it was 100% We corrected these issues with her overbite and overjet with a combination of braces and elastics. The importance of starting her treatment at a young age was paramount because if ignored til she was older, we may have needed jaw surgery for this correction. We always treat every case as comprehensively as possible, but try to use the most conservative means. We are so proud of her outcome as it has improved the overall health of her mouth, increased her self-esteem and confidence in her smile! See more

Monday Makeover - not all makeovers are for cosmetic reasons We always treat function before esthetics. This ultimately gives us the best and long lasting results. Jamie came to us originally because she had severe TMJ pain and clicking in her jaw that was limiting her ability to open her jaw and eat hard foods (in dental need talk - disc displacement with reduction) A consult revealed that her bite was too deep (as you dont see her lower teeth when she bites d...own together) We decided to do orthodontics to reposition her jaw to alleviate the pain and the bonus was that she would be able to get straighter teeth in the process. Fast forward 18 months, her jaw pain and headaches are gone. The pain that was once so debilitating had been resolved. Notice when she bites you can now see her lower teeth and her overall alignment is much improved. Weve achieved all our functional goals. Jamie was very pleased, but with her wedding coming up she really wanted to put on the finishing touches and sparkle Although things were straight, her front teeth had worn down from her previous deep bite. We decided to do some whitening and anterior crowns to give her the esthetics and balance she was looking for. She cant stop smiling now and we know she is going to be stunning on her special day. Congratulations from all your friends @airdriespringsdental Special thanks to @unice_dental_art for the beautiful porcelain work. @ Airdrie, Alberta See more

Happy Canada Day!!! We are exactly halfway through 2020 and its a perfect time to reflect on the year past so far. I wont lie, this has been a trying and tumultuous start, but keeping things that are in our immediate control in the forefront vs those that are not (that cause undue stress and exhaustion) has really helped keep me grounded. I have used 2020 as a year for growth as Ive been fortunate to meet mentors online that I would never have had the opport...unity to and done procedures I never thought possible. We have developed virtual systems that will serve the practice now and moving forward. And finally being able to spend quality time with my children and family that I never would have had the chance to. I wouldnt change a thing 2020 has brought to the table, unless there is a zombie apocalypse. Now that would suck Have a great day!!! And lets crush the rest of this year!!! See more

Happy Fathers Day to all the great Dads out there! This has always been a bittersweet day for me. 21 years ago my father passed away on Fathers Day weekend. This day rocked me to my core, but has also shaped me into who I am today. My dad instilled in me a hard work ethic, to never give up on anything (no matter how difficult) and a good sense of humor. Although we grew up with very little as an immigrant family, he was a great provider (with the little that we had) and ...generous to all. He probably worked too much and was taken too early, but from this I have learned to be present with my children and to never take anything for granted. I Love you Dad (sorry for the cringy photos @hankdogg88) What lesson have you learned from your Dad? Reply or send an emoji below Have a blessed day with your loved ones See more

Throwback Thursday - Invisalign Total treatment time 10 months This is one of my favorite phase 1 cases ever. It wasnt necessary the most technical challenging, but the overall results and improvement in self esteem and confidence is what Ill remember the most. ... Jill was shy and never smiled when I first met her at the consult. Over the course of our treatment though you could see her personality start to shine through and it was awesome to witness someone come out of their shell. To be a part of this transformation was powerful and to this day whenever she is in the office she is a glowing example of what a smile can do. There are many things to notice in a case like this besides the esthetics 1The deep overbite has been addressed. She no longer bites into her palate and we have set her up for with a healthy jaw joint and the avoidance of any tmd issues as an adult 2Expansion of her arches to create a broad beautiful smile. This also allows the rest of the adult teeth to erupt in place when they come in. It may also prevent future orthodontic work 3Obvously alignment of her teeth is the icing on the cake as she cant stop smiling now. Giving her self confidence back as a preteen was ultimately the best thing we accomplished We are always booking consults to see if Invisalign is right for you or your child. If you cannot come in at this time we are also providing virtual consults (simply DM us) Let us know what makes you smile today in the comments below See more

Do we do Botox? You can say were quite well versed in the topic! Dr. Ng has been doing cosmetic injections for over 10 years. Botox/Dysport belong to a class of medications known as neuromodulators. Neuromodulators are used to treat facial wrinkles, bruxism, and migraines. The treatment works by temporarily blocking the signals to muscles that cause them to contract. Neuromodulators are administered with very small injections under the skin and are very well ...tolerated. A session takes only 10-15 minutes. One thing to note though, is that final results will not be immediately visible after your treatment. It takes 7-10 days for the treatment to reduce wrinkles and facial lines. So its is best to plan a week out before any major event. In most individuals results last approximately 3 to 4 months, depending on factors such as metabolism and strength of the muscle We are booking appointments now and have virtual consults available if you cannot come into the office (DM or go to our website) Comment below if you found this helpful and would like to see before and afters or actual procedures See more

Sound on - Why is Dr. Ng is jumping at the chance to get to work today? Happy June 1st, first day of the month, first day for the clinic to be open for all services. It is literally #dayone for us all! #ThisisDayOne is a concept Ive learned from the incredible @dayonedrew. Its essentially when you are at your job, you envision it as your first day of work! Think about your first day of work. You get up early to get ready, you are listening and focused on the job a...t hand, you ask a tonne of questions and double, even triple check everything. You are never more committed to your job than on that first day. And as soon as the second day begins, all that excitement slowly peters out. Ive been blessed to be in a profession I love Ive been practicing dentistry for 15 years now and everyday has been my first day of work! Let me know if this concept of Day One would work for you! Homeschool Science - Dentistry style This weeks lesson - Magnetic Fields So the reason the toonie starts spinning on its axis is because when the electric toothbrushes are placed at opposite poles it creates a magnetic field. This invisible force causes flux and electrons to move through space and in turn makes stuff move ? ... Or lets say its magic. Good old-fashioned magic Ive always loved science as a kid, especially as it pertains to the human body. Its no wonder I got into dentistry and find it amazing everyday. What was your favorite subject in school? Comment below See more

On Saturday mornings, Ive made it a habit to reflect upon the week and jot down the things I am grateful for, to celebrate the little wins and to make note of the challenges I faced. As this was our first week back to work in over 2 months there was definitely the fear of uncertainty and questions that were resonating in my head... 1 Will my team be accepting of the new changes in the dental guidelines and protocols?... 2 Will our patients be wanting to come in during these uncertain times? 3 Can we provide the same level of service, care and satisfaction that our patients deserve? I can proudly say that all 3 questions were answered with a resounding YES! With that being said, my gratitude journal reads a little like this: Today I appreciate my team, who took our protocols seriously and to the next level. I cannot do even a percentage of what I do without your help and it starts from our front end to the clinical team I am grateful for the support of our patients who were more than appreciative and came out in droves to take care of their oral health. Seeing each and everyone one of you and the stories we shared about our quarantine experiences will be something I will not forget. I am grateful for my partners and management team whom I can collaborate and share ideas with to make this journey a little less bumpy. Without you guys this would be so much more difficult and definitely a lot less fun I am truly appreciative of my wife and children that have had to endure being under the same roof with me. Listening to me complain about the rules and regulations that we will need to jump through on the daily, must have been sooooo boring. You are so patient, so loving and the fact that I can use you as a sounding board has really helped me get through this. Leave me an emoji below if this resonated with you See more

Across the country, dentists are preparing to re-open their practices. In Alberta, on May 14th we hope to have fully established guidelines from our dental association, as to what will be considered standard treatment protocols. I can tell you that my colleagues and I are working diligently everyday on how we can adapt our clinics and protocols to make them over and above your expectations. It is taking a great amount of effort in getting all the changes in place and many h...ave asked what to expect as a patient that comes to the office. -there will be pre screening at the time of booking the appointment and screening the day of the appointment -the waiting room will be minimal to non-existent (we will not have our crappy, out of date magazines either as they cannot be sanitized) -so instead you will be asked to stay in your vehicle (we will call/text you to come in when it is your appointment time) -upon entry we take your temperature, necessary vitals and asked to use our luxurious hand sanitizer (dont worry the astronauts you see, wont bite) -This is followed by a 1% hydrogen peroxide pre-treatment dental rinse (as it is proven to break down the protective lipid coating in enveloped viruses like the coronavirus, thats your #billnye factoid for the day) -We will bring you and only you (unless you are a minor) into the operatory to respect social distancing and the amount of people gathered in the building. -PPE or Personal Protective Equipment will be different (see astronauts above or #Covidchic as we like to call it) -Contactless check out in the lobby as we want to be as efficient and expedient as possible -all hard surfaces (door handles, cabinets, drawers, pens, clipboards will be sanitized after every use -Our sterilization protocols were great before (not to toot out horns) and will continue to be post covid There will likely be more changes as we receive guidance from the dental association. We will continue to keep you up to date and we look forward to seeing you soon. Let us know in the comments below if this was helpful and what other things you would like to know

Happy Sunday As we patiently await further instructions from the Alberta Dental Association and College to provide us with clinical and safety guidelines, we wanted to give you a sneak peek of what to expect when we can welcome patients back to the office. One of the biggest changes will be the the enhanced #PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) that will be needed. This may include gowns, N95 masks , face shields and surgical caps ... The funny thing is Dr. Ng always wanted to be an astronaut when he was a kid. Now he gets to play dress up at work Let us know what you wanted to be when you were growing up See more

UPDATE - The College has stated the anticipated date for non-urgent care is May 14th Happy FriYay!!! Our team wanted to show some love and the good news that we received from the premier yesterday. We learned that certain services will be open May 4th and this includes dental clinics. BUT the fine print states that this is subject to the guidelines set out by their professional colleges.... The Alberta Dental College has responded that these guidelines will not be released until May 4th. So at that point we will have a better understanding of what will happen next (including types of procedures, PPE requirements, and pre-screening protocols, just to name a few). So for the moment it is still dental emergencies only, but we are one step closer. We miss you and love you guys and we will see you soon !!!

If today were the last day of your life, would you want to do what you are about to do today? - Steve Jobs I love this question because it gets you thinking about where you are in your life, where you want to be in your life and if you are in the right direction of your dreams and your goals. But this is a tough question to answer when you are sitting at home just waiting So, last week I had to go into the office to see a few critical emergencies. It was the first time ...I had been in the office in over a month since we were shut down. It was a weird feeling to walk through an empty parking lot, into an empty office that is usually bustling with team members and patients. The quietness was eerie as Im accustomed to hearing laughs, witty banter and the sound of suctions and handpieces whirring. I questioned myself, Am I in the right place? I carried on, to put on the new N95 mask that I had just been fitted for. It was really tight and uncomfortable, but something I will need to get used to. Even when I strapped on my loupes ,the magnification started playing tricks with my vision for a few seconds. I really felt out of my element. As I walked into the operatory, I was greeted by a nervous little 6 yr old girl. She had been suffering for 2 weeks through a really bad tooth abscess. Both mom and I knew the tooth needed to come out. The funny thing is once I knew I could be of service, my instincts took over and the insecurities I had prior were quickly abolished. It was like I never missed a day of work. In less than 5 minutes, we had the tooth out and she was all smiles again. I knew, right then, I was where I needed to be. Even though the protocols in dentistry will change and probably will be different moving forward in a post Covid world, I know that this is where I belong. Dentistry has blessed me with a career that I truly love and this time away has really taught me this. I miss the camaraderie with my team and the bonds I have developed with my patients and their families. Trust me when I say we miss you and cant wait to see all your smiles again!!! Have a blessed week What things are you doing that are in alignment with your goals?

Every year we have a team building event where we talk about growth and mindset. This year we gave actionable steps in accomplishing big hairy auspicious goals #bhag Looking at the goal in its entirety can be daunting. The key is to take the goal and break it into small daily improvements or what we also call the 1% better rule. At first it may seem very insignificant, but compounding over time will add up to a massive difference in results Dr.Ng is currently working hard on achieving certain fitness goals by doing cardio in the morning and working on strength and flexibility in the afternoon. Comment below and tell us something that can you do today to be 1% better?
