Family Violence: How To Help #13: Get their consent. Unless you are calling for help because you have witnessed violence or know that a person is at risk of imminent harm, it is best and most helpful if you have consent before acting on someone's behalf. Don’t share their story, arrange supports, or make plans without their consent and/or their active involvement.... Family Violence: How To Help #9: Be patient. Pro Tip, your conversation will not go like this, Hey, are you being hurt at home?, Sure am, I’ll go get my things and move out., Cool., I know, right! For many reasons, ending domestic violence takes time. Your job as a caring support is to acknowledge the reasons why someone may stay in a dangerous situation. Look them up. Read about them. Watch a Ted Talk. Talk to someone who works in domestic violence recovery about the...m. This is important. There will be times when the very best and most helpful thing you can do is standby. Talk about work, the weather, recipes, or anything else. Stay in touch, and don’t force the person into a conversation about domestic violence. November is Family Violence Prevention Month, and we will be sharing tips for how you can support your friends and loved ones here all month long.

Statistics show that standing with a person who is the victim of a crime, and helping them to understand how the criminal justice system works with their case, results in an increased rate of successful prosecutions. We are proud to stand with people who are victims of crime, helping them to remain engaged with their case. But we can't do it alone. ... Please, be 1:1 this year. Family Violence: How To Help #8: Focus on the behaviour. While your instinct may be blurt out, What an _____!, it is best to keep opinions and commentary to yourself when you are talking with a person who is a victim of domestic violence. Focus on the behaviour, and not the perpetrator. It is not normal, and it’s not right, that you are being hurt in your own home. I am sorry that you have had to live through this, and I am thankful that you are talking to me about it. ... Family Violence: How To Help #12: Stay in contact. People who are victims of domestic violence are often isolated from friends and family. Be persistently encouraging to them. Stay in contact in the way that they feel is the best and safest way to maintain contact. Check-in regularly to remind them that you care, and to ensure that they are safe.
