A moment of appreciation for our wonderful & devoted photographer Simon Blakesley Photography! Simon is an important member of our team, and we always look forward to seeing his creative takes. He can be found plane spotting in rain or shine, and even has a special pair of gloves for shooting at -25 and below temperatures! Simon has a particular knack for incorporating the weather in unique ways and always manages to tell a story with his images. A former aircraft technici...an in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Dr. Simon Blakesley moved to the Yukon 25 years ago. Based in Whitehorse, he began his photographic relationship with Air North in 2007 while flying frequently to the University of British Columbia to train as a researcher and complete a PhD degree in educational leadership. Simon’s aviation and portrait photography is regularly featured in Yukon, North of Ordinary. Skies Magazine, Canada’s leading aviation magazine regularly publishes his images, both online and in print. Committed to improvement and creating high quality, engaging images, Simon has placed first in Skies’ annual photography contest (2015 and 2018), and was awarded Grand Prize by Skies in the 2019 contest. Simon’s photographic journey began at age 10, thanks to his father who was a photographer in the British Royal Navy. While he enjoys combining his love of aircraft with his passion for photography, he places the greatest value on working with others who are also dedicated to aviation in the North. A foggy first takeoff of the day to mark 100 Years of Aviation in the Yukon!

Air North, Yukon's Airline 30.05.2020

Happy 100th Anniversary of Yukon Aviation! We are grateful for our amazing team - some of whom have been with us since the beginning. From our maintenance department, to flight attendants and pilots, and everywhere in between, we are lucky to have had such wonderful people work with us over the past 43 years, and grow alongside the company. We are privileged to share this moment with our team today. Yukon Transportation Museum

Air North was founded in 1977, just over 43 years ago, as Air North Charter and Training by Joseph Sparling & Tom 'Ace' Wood. Over the years, we have owned several different types of aircraft as the company has grown beyond its original scope. By the early 1980s, our fleet had grown from a single Cessna 206 to a variety of aircraft on wheels, floats, and skisuntil we acquired the famous and world-tested Douglas DC-3 and DC-4 aircraft. Just over ten years later the Douglas ...aircraft were retired in favour of Hawker Siddeley 748 turboprops, which is around the time when the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation of Old Crow expressed an interest in investing in Air North. The investment from the Vuntut Gwitchin took Air North to a whole new level as a business. Their investment in 2002 allowed us to enter a whole new era with the purchase of two Boeing 737 jets which allowed us to establish our strongest, most popular route between Whitehorse and Vancouver, and later flights between the Yukon and Alberta. Without their partnership we would not be the airline we are today. Since then we have continued to modernize with Boeing 737-400 and -500 jets and ATR turboprops. The expansion of our fleet and service have allowed us to develop our offering to include many important local partners. From serving Yukon Brewing and Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters onboard, to the fresh produce used to make our meals, and being a part of local publication North of Ordinary, we are so pleased we have been able to incorporate such a showcase of the Yukon onboard. We appreciate everyone who has played a role in supporting us and our partners over the years. Thank you for making us Yukon's Airline and a part of this special moment in history.

1927 was also an important year for aviation in the Yukon, as it brought to life Yukon Airways and Exploration Company by Clyde Wann and Andy Cruickshank. The company introduced airmail to the Yukon, with the first round of mail leaving from Whitehorse to Mayo and Dawson in the Queen of the Yukon, piloted by Andy Cruickshank. World War II led to an aviation boom in the Territory which made way for industry giants Canadian Pacific Air Lines and Pacific Western Airlines. These... giants, as well as other industry players like Grant McConachie's Yukon Southern Airways and George Simmons' Northern Airways, as well as a batallion of Northern bush pilots, served the North well, and put it on the map as a welcome home for a healthy aviation industry in the eyes of the federal government. Here’s an early Air North brochure which included a nod to the territory's aviation history. See more

The history of aviation within the Yukon was largely undocumented until 2012, when Bob Cameron released "Yukon Wings." Cameron, a born and raised Yukoner into an aviation family, explains how having planes in the sky has allowed photos to be taken of northern landscapes which led to the flagging of many more possible mining sites, showcasing tourism potential and assisting First Nations with greater access to the land. He sheds light on the upsides and downsides of the new industry, and how the more extreme elements of life in the North like the climate and daylight, played a role in shaping the industry in its early days. Can you imagine how different life would be if it took 9 hours and required 4 fueling stops to fly from Whitehorse to Vancouver? The first flight to touchdown in Whitehorse set way for a period of innovation and infrastructure establishment that laid the foundation for air travel as it is known in the North. What was once a patch of trees, quickly became a landing strip and runway close to modern day Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport. Further to that, today airliners cruise at around 900 kph but the aircraft flown by the Black Wolf Squadron would peak at 200 kph. Aircraft also had to stop roughly every 725 kilometres to refuel, whereas an Air North Boeing 737-500 has a maximum range of approximately 5600 kilometres.

In June of 1920, Captain H.T. Douglas of the US Air Force and Captain H.A. Leroyer of the Canadian Air Board came together to work on a plan to better understand the feasibility of air routes internationally and into the North. The flight path would stop in 16 cities, leaving from Mineola, New York, touching down in Whitehorse and Dawson, Yukon with a final destination of Nome, Alaska. On 16 August 1920, history was made as four De Havilland DH-4 biplanes, known as the Black Wolf Squadron, touched down in Whitehorse, Yukon. The first of the four biplanes touched down in Dawson, Yukon the next day. After successfully completing their journey to Nome, Alaska, the Black Wolf Squadron returned to Mineola, New York in October of that same year. Yukon Transportation Museum

This Sunday marks 100 Years of Aviation in the Yukon. The 100th anniversary, in the midst of a global pandemic which has had a major effect on global aviation, is a time to reflect on past accomplishments and look ahead to brighter days. Everyday this week, we will be sharing important moments from Yukon's aviation history to celebrate the advancements that have been made which make living in the North as accessible and enjoyable as it is today. - Yukon Aviation Fact: In 19...42, through the Lend-Lease Program, the United States Government built the Alaska Highway and established a string of airfields to send required defense materials to Alaska during World War 2. This program was an essential part of the Yukon becoming a gateway for Canada and the rest of the United States to Alaska. For more information, check out this MacBride Museum of Yukon History Yukon Nugget by Les McLaughlin: https://yukonnuggets.com/stories/lend-lease-program - We are excited to be celebrating with Yukon Transportation Museum this week!
