This coming week is National Non-Smoking Week. Unfortunately, one of the great silent ironies of (non-pandemic) life in Vancouver and other Canadian cities today is that many of us can usually get up, take smoke-free transit to our smoke-free workplaces, afterwards eat dinner in a smoke-free restaurant, then maybe later hail a smoke-free taxicab to catch a show or game at a smoke-free venue, only to ultimately have to go back to an apartment or condominium where we are forced... to breathe our neighbour’s secondhand smoke against our wills in our very own homes. Health Canada has determined that no level of exposure to secondhand smoke can be considered safe. ://vancouversun.com/opinion/dr-stuart-kreisman-smoke-free-multi-unit-dwellings-the-absent-centrepiece-of-protection-from-secondhand-smoke?fbclid=IwAR3vPHas22KWZjBkeMZ0oYfkrFC3KLX8JRIfKJ-g-SXcAfBLSJ4AA8-SuC4 See more

I think many of us can relate: "The following is a letter written by Shannon Levesque to our sister publication, Burnaby Now. I realized too late that I had moved into a building where smoking is permitted even inside the suites. ... I did not think that it would be legal even in 2019, as I had never experienced such a torment before. I feel so upset, trapped, frustrated by not being able to open a window to cool down or breathe fresh air. I doubt, sadly, that I am alone in this. No doubt there are many tenants like me out there stuck at home and powerless to make the necessary changes. I realize that in these stressful, community virus days, coping mechanisms like smoking are treasured companions. But these individuals' coping strategies do heighten stress for others. Why in a time when we know that even second-hand smoke is a known carcinogen is this allowed? I am not opposed to individual freedoms, except when they impinge on the health and safety of others. Their smoke does not stay within their apartment's boundaries. I am being forced to live with their habits in my home." https://www.princegeorgematters.com//letter-smoking-neighb

TORONTO -- With COVID-19 cases soaring, health care officials are trying to get ahead of the worst by looking at who is most at risk of ending up in the ICU and on ventilators if they catch the virus. High on that list is smokers. ://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/covid-19-seems-to-be-hitting-smokers-more-severely-scientists-warn-1.4884862?fbclid=IwAR2t02Mc4kjUWkj51iSgwU0zFWDqd8Nz7WL8KXl59ewcH14m0RFyOLs1OEc
