Today should have been the Grade 3 Farm tour - a morning where 1000+ Grade 3 students across PEI would have gotten on a bus, visited 2 farms and had a locally p...roduced muffin and delicious ADL milk. They would have saw animals, fields in production, spoken with farmers and learned where their food is coming from. The reality is, even here on PEI, there are kids who haven’t been to a farm, don’t realize food is produced at a farm (and not out back in a grocery store) and have a limited knowledge of what is grown on a tree vs in the ground or even that meat/milk comes from an animal! The questions the kids have ALWAYS surprise me - they are thoughtful, curious and often very basic. It always blows my mind and hurts my heart at the same time. When the group gets on the bus to head back to the school, I always take a minute to thank the students for coming and being good learners, to the teachers and chaperones for coming and I challenge them when they go back to school to look at their lunch, talk about the food items and ingredients used and to understand what could be produced here on PEI, what would come from outside the region and how each of the elements is grown/produced. Then I suggest that at supper tonight they could do the same with their parents! Talking about food doesn’t have to be complicated - and using reliable resources like Agriculture in the Classroom Canada Snap Ag means you have reliable, trustworthy, factual information to learn! (Link in comments) Farmers work hard every day around the world to put food on your table. It’s often taken for granted that the next meal will just be there. Take some time to explore, understand and discover food production - it really is fascinating stuff!!! To this years Grade 3s - we hope we can do something special in the spring for you and we hope next Fall, just before Open Farm Day, we will be able to load up the buses and get kids on farms again!!!

Meet Bevin MacLellan, 20 year old Plant Science student at the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus! Bevin was one of the original members of AG in the Field! Bevin ...was born and raised in Indian River PEI and farms alongside his family at Shorelane Farms Ltd., where they grow chip stock potatoes, cereals, and cover crops. Bevin operates and maintains equipment and does labour on the farm, and has recently begun learning and becoming more involved in the agronomy aspect of their operation. Bevin tells us that the farm life chose him; He has always been surrounded by it, and agriculture has fascinated him since he was a kid. Curiosity and passion has driven Bevin’s path to where he is today, and continues to drive him in his education and work in the field. His favourite part about the AG industry are the many amazing people involved in it and how they all work together to better their operations, and ultimately feed the world. After completing his education, Bevin plans to return to the farm full time, and is interested in doing some agronomy work on top of his farm responsibilities. #aggie #aginthefield #agvocate #agproud #dalagriculture #princeedwardisland #peipotatoes #peiag #agrifood #student
