Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Women and girls around the world experience many forms of criminal violence, including, in some countries, state-sanctioned rape as a tool of war. In Canada, especially during this year of Covid-19, we are seeing a rise in cases of intimate partner violence or murder of women and, in some cases, their children. Our federal government anticipated this and provided additional funding to women's shelte...rs and other groups working in this field. But you can help too, by refusing to ignore a problem of family or intimate partner violence you're aware of, and seeking help or advice as to how to handle or report it. November is Women Abuse Prevention Month. Especially during Covid lockdowns where families are now being asked to remain with their own households, abused women and their children are at heightened risk of violence, with more incidents being reported to police and shelters. Please don't ignore such situations. If unable to speak out or intervene, get advice from your local women's shelter, police or Victim Services.
