Ever wonder what happens in a climbing gym when only members are around? Most people would assume climbing, and 99% of the time, they'd be right. Often times success comes after a struggle. You have to throw yourself at your goals over and over to make any headway. The journey sometimes makes you feel like a crazy person, but you keep pushing forward. This is what perseverance is: the drive to succeed despite the difficulty in achieving success. We see it everyday in the gym with different people pushing to finish their projects. Hey everyone. It's been a heck of a week for me. Here are some updates for reopen day. 1) The town has changed their plans for which door is to be used. Everyone will need to enter via the main/east entrance to the facility (see image). The doors to the ACC will be kept locked but ACC staff will be present to allow people in. 2) upon arriving, the ACC staff may ask questions but you can let them know you're going to the climbing gym and they'll allow entry. 3) complete a new ...waiver on ajaxrockoasis.com before coming in. Our waiver stations will not be available for use. 4) remember to check occupancy before coming via either on the front page of our site or by calling us directly. If the gym is full when you arrive you will be turned away. 5) sanitize often and make sure you follow gym rules posted outside and inside the gym. 6) please don't visit us if you're unwell. Hey y'all, happy long weekend. I wanted to touch on some of our upcoming changes as we open on Monday next week (Sept 14). I strongly advise you check out the full article at ajaxrockoasis.com (ohh new website), or by going directly to it via this URL: https://ajaxrockoasis.com/covid-19-reopening-plans/ "Short" version: Masks will be worn at all times while in the gym. It's likely this will change in the future (to allow people who are actively climbing to remove them), but... we're going to get settled first. Heavy sanitization (both by climbers on themselves, and our staff on the shared spaces in the gym) will be in effect. Social distancing within your bubbles will be required and enforced. We are not operating on a booking system for regular climbing, we will be allowing walk-ins. There is an occupancy counter on our website, ajaxrockoasis.com and our max capacity is upto ~15 participants. It is in your best interests to avoid coming during prime time. Entry into the facility is through the back (south west, near the tennis courts, NOT the HMS entrance) entrance to the ACC only. Visits will be for a two-hour block. If it's not busy, you're welcome to stay until more climbers show up. Loose chalk is allowed but we would prefer you used balls or liquid. Use of chalk buckets and chalk rentals are temporarily suspended. There are a bunch more points on the main page of our website (ajaxrockoasis.com) so please check it out. Lastly, our weekend hours have been tweaked: Saturdays 11am-7pm, Sundays 12pm-6pm. Weekday hours remain unchanged at 4pm-10:30pm. Hey y'all. It's been a while. Sorry for the lack of communication. Oh man, where to start? Alright! A bunch of people have been in touch asking when we're reopening. Sadly, I can't tell you. We've been delayed due to the Town of Ajax deciding they're not opening their community centres yet. After a several emails, they refuse to give me any idea of when they plan to open. Meanwhile, they're happily opening their own services (ARC is opening their pools, for example), so we're... a bit irritated to say the least. Since shutdown in March, we've had maybe 3 hours of access to the gym, so we still definitely need to prepare some things, but we should be ready to open whenever they're allowing us to. For now, if you have any questions regarding reopening, I highly encourage you to reach out to the Mayor, Shaun Collier (@mayor_collier on Twitter, @MayorSCollier on Facebook, or via email [email protected]) as clearly the town has no intention of cooperating with me on any level whatsoever. That said, upon reopening, we'll be closely monitoring our situation. We will be implementing a max capacity, so try to head in during non-peak hours. Regular cleaning and other safety measures will be taking place. Prior to re-open we will be issuing a new waiver, so any individuals under the age of 18 will need new forms from their parents prior to visiting. We'll keep you posted on when we have an update from the Town. Rumour has it that they don't plan to reopen the facility until after Labour Day. It's been almost a month since anyone's been in the climbing gym, staff included. I came in today to pickup some some things and I can't help but feel a little sad. I'm excited to get back to work though. Just being in here makes me think of all the things I put on hold before COVID-19 hit. I guess it's time to make some plans for whenever that is.... I have spent such a large portion of the last several years in the climbing gym. It's now been two weeks since we've had to close and I miss my home. I miss the feels. I miss the people who have become like my second family. Looks like it's gonna be a long haul. Town of Ajax has confirmed that we're closed until further notice. Bummer, right? COVID-19 update from Ajax Rock Oasis. Well, it looks like I spoke too soon. The Town of Ajax has decided to close their community centres due to the virus concerns. As a result we are closed also.... The tentatively set closure dates are March 14 until April 5, but it is possible the closure will extend beyond this date. We will absolutely keep everyone posted on what happens next! Just another COVID-19 update from us at Ajax Rock Oasis. The subject of the virus and its ongoing escalation has been the topic of discussion as of late. At this time, public health risk in Durham Region remains low. We will continue to observe the situation as it evolves, but for the time being, we will remain open and our March Break activities will continue to as planned.... As we are located inside the community centre, it's difficult to tell you that we will stay open with any amount of certainty. If public concern continues to grow, it's likely the Town of Ajax may decide to temporarily close the Ajax Community Centre (and us, as a result). We will continue to update interested parties every step of the way. Rest assured, we're taking necessary actions to step up our cleaning and sanitation game. All public spaces are getting extra attention, making sure that we sanitize as much as we're able. Being in a climbing space makes sterilization difficult, but we're doing our best with the non-climbing surfaces in our care. To anyone who is sick or doing any international travel: we urge you to stay home, rest, and visit us when you're free and clear. Take care out there and we'll see you in the gym!
