As someone who loves their job as a bookkeeper and who genuinely cares about my clients and their businesses, I will offer another answer to what is all going on. FOR BUSINESS OWNERS This subsidy would be available to eligible employers that see a drop of at least 30 per cent of their revenue. In applying for the subsidy, employers would be required to attest to the decline in revenue.... The subsidy amount for such employees will be limited to the eligible remuneration paid in any pay period between March 15 and June 6, 2020, up to a maximum benefit of $847 per week or 75 per cent of the employees pre-crisis weekly remuneration. Employers must make their best effort to top-up employees salaries to bring them to pre-crisis levels. You must apply monthly to receive the subsidy, which the online portal details will be made shortly. This is not to be confused with the Temporary Wage Subsidy which applies to payroll deductions not employees wages which is already in effect. Heres an example CRA gave: Bruno and Tisha run a floral shop in Burnaby, British Columbia. They have four fulltime employees, each earning $800 per week, and 6 part-time employees, each earning $400 per week, for a total weekly payroll of $5,600. Bruno and Tisha have closed their shop and are only fulfilling online orders during this challenging period. They are keeping all of their employees on the payroll, paying them their full regular wages, despite their revenues being down by 30 per cent. Bruno and Tisha would be eligible for a weekly wage subsidy of $4,200 ($600 for each of their full-time employees and $300 for each of their part-time employees). There seems to be an overwhelming amount of information for small business relief. I got lost in the CRA website today and did some research. Now, I understand that Trudeau rolled out something yesterday regarding a 75% wage subsidy for employers, CRA does not have any of this info available right now. The link below answers some very basic questions about Temporary Wage Subsidy for Small Businesses in regards to reducing Payroll Deductions. This reduction is in effect already and you do not have to apply for it. Id like to take a moment to let all my clients know that I am still working and I have been taking all necessary precautions with the COVID-19, cleaning and disinfecting my office. In keeping with the practice of social distancing, I am finding that scheduled drop off and pick up times have been working but until further notice, I cannot hold meetings in my office. I can also meet you in my driveway, which I have done this week. Tax tip of the day for all my teachers or early childhood educators!! I had a conversation with my favourite teacher while I was studying for my income tax test and asked if she saved her receipts for any out of pocket expenses for her classroom, she was unaware that she could use this for her taxes as credit. I know teachers provide extra learning tools for their classrooms that come out of their own pocket, so save those receipts for your tax returns!! Carrie L. Hembroff Murphy

With the Christmas season upon us, I thought I would share this tip regarding gift giving for your employees. We all know that a cash bonus at Christmas time is wonderful AND taxed but did you know, you can buy your employee a gift and it will be a write off for your company and tax free for your employee? Please note, gift cards are considered near cash and does not apply. See below for details and feel free to ask questions!! A gift has to be for a special occasion such as... a religious holiday, a birthday, a wedding, or the birth of a child. Policy for non-cash gifts and awards: You may give an employee an unlimited number of non-cash gifts and awards with a combined total value of $500 or less annually. If the fair market value (FMV) of the gifts and awards you give your employee is greater than $500, the amount over $500 must be included in the employees income. For example, if you give gifts and awards with a total value of $650, there is a taxable benefit of $150 ($650-$500).
