In the City of Red Deer over the past few weeks we have seen a spike in reported dog attacks/bites on people and pets reported into us. We are not sure exactly what's driving the spike, but we suspect dog attacks have increased during COVID-19 crisis due to more pet owners out walking their pets, being lax on leashing their pets when off their properties and increases in deliveries being sent to pet owner homes. 58% of all dog bites occur on the owners property. Dog bites ...can be prevented by ensuring your pet is properly trained, well socialized and used to different people and animals both in a public environment and inside your home when visitors attend. Take precautions and take immediate measures to prevent your dog from biting as soon as you see any signs of aggressive behavior before it escalates into something more serious. As a pet owner you are liable for your dog's behavior at all times. See more

What to do when Dog Barking causes a Nuisance? Barking dogs impact the quality of life in our neighborhoods and are a common problem for many residents. Asking why dogs bark is like asking why people talk. It's their way of communicating to warn us of danger, communicate with other dogs, tell us they are bored, or to let us know they are scared. The act of barking is 100% natural, however, depending on the extent of the barking it can be considered excessive. At Alberta Ani...mal Services we recommend the following procedures to assist residents in resolving this common issue: * First off neighbors should attempt to resolve the problem through open communication with the pet owner. In many instances, the pet owner is not aware that their dog is disturbing their neighbor. * If open communication with your neighbor does not resolve the issue, citizens may report the barking to our dispatch either online on our website, or via phone during business hours. Animal Services Officers will attempt to educate the owners of the concern by issuing a warning. Keeping animals under control is a key element in maintaining a livable neighborhood. Please help both your neighbors and the City by being a responsible pet owner. See more
