#FridayFun ~Before... and after! Here we can see the domesticated 'orthotic pede technicus', commonly known as the foot orthotic technician, of the back shop grasslands. Best to approach slowly as these curious creatures can be easily spooked while overtop their grinding wheel. This particular species of the 'technicus' genus can be characterized by their distinct toolkit: copious amounts of glue. The 'orthotic pede technicus' can be recognized by their marvelous coat of black foam with white plaster markings. Fascinating! Tune in next week to see us capture the magnificent 'prosthesium clinicus' in its natural environment. . . . #FridayFun #beforeandafter #clinicwildlife #footorthotics #FOs

A huge thank you to all the volunteers at Mask Makers YYC who generously donated masks and scrub caps to the AOPC clinic. They did such a GREAT job! This incredible group of human beings are a collection of volunteer sewists, makers and inventors that are donating their time to make masks for the working community of the Calgary area. If you’d like to contribute to this effort, but you don’t know how to sew, that’s okay! Mask Makers YYC also need volunteer drivers and accept material donations as well! Let’s show them some love for the amazing and inspiring work that they’re doing

We would like to introduce you to Alison; she has been a patient with us since 2014. Alison was only 15 years old when a horseback riding accident badly damaged her left leg. After 23 years of surgery after surgery, Alison, with two children at the time and an established teaching career, made the decision to amputate in order to open a new, more active chapter in her life. . Alison can attest to the mental and emotional obstacles that many people are faced with upon losing a... limb. Alison’s physiotherapist was heavily involved throughout her journey, continuously offering her hope and support. Together they worked on retraining her brain and refocusing her perspective which, in time, brought Alison happiness, pride and comfort. Questions like What are you looking forward to tomorrow? may seem mundane to some, but can also be used as a beacon of hope for those of us that are still battling through our journey. Alison’s gratitude and perseverance helps us @aopcyyc understand that, no matter how small, there is always something for us to look forward to. . Here’s Alison learning to run again and then leading a Terry Fox run at school. And that’s right; after 23 years, Alison also got right back on a horse. Oh and did we mention that she’s now a gold medalist after winning the 250 sprint in the 2016 outrigger canoeing World Sprint Championships? We’re so happy to see that she found ‘Alison’ again. . For #LimbLossAwarenessMonth, @aopcyyc is celebrating our AMAZING patients by sharing their empowering experiences with limb loss or limb difference. . Ed has a transtibial amputation and has been a patient with us since 2009. After his accident resulting in his amputation, Ed joined the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiers as a student (now known as Canadian Adaptive Snowsports) and then became a volunteer, an instructor and, eventually, a supervisor with CADS Calgary. Si...nce then, he has also obtained his Level 1 Ski Instructor certification with Canadian Ski Instructor Alliance (CSIA) and continues to volunteer his time with CADS. . Here is one of Ed’s first days back on the slopes at an indoor ski hill in Dubai after only 5 lessons with CADS! . In the next photo, Ed is at the British Army Training Unit in Suffield, Alberta. Him and 5 other amputees took part in a training exercise for 2000 British troops heading to Afghanistan! . We’re so grateful to be a part of Ed’s many journeys and adventures and can’t wait to hear what he’s planning next! . #LimbLossAwarenessMonth #LLAM #aopcyyc #CanadianAdaptiveSnowsports #CADS #CanadianSkiInstructorAlliance #CSIA See more
