The Alberta Northern Lights would like to congratulate Dr. Robert Daniel Steadward for being awarded the Companions of the Order of Canada! This is the highest level of the Order of Canada and it is well deserved! The sport of wheelchair basketball here in Edmonton and around the world would not be where it is now without his leadership and dedication!

Day 79 I have been nominated by Cheryl Vines to list 10 athletes (this is going to be a lot more than 10 and in this case more a contribution than player) I hav...e enjoyed watching ... Hard to say the most because so many have done so much ... One athlete per day for 10 consecutive days (plus). No explanations, no reviews, only pics. Each day I'll ask someone to join me like Dan Brinton ... Dan is not on Facebook so maybe others have pictures to share Ross Norton Barb Griffin Braden Hirsch See more

A message from our Founder, Rick Hansen in memory of his friend, John Lundie. I was stunned to hear the news that my good friend, and former wheelchair basketb...all teammate, John Lundie passed away recently. Terry Fox and I first encountered John during a critical playoff match at the national wheelchair basketball championship in Edmonton in the late 70s. Terry and I were on the BC Provincial team and John was on the Manitoba Provincial team. BC was favoured to win, yet Manitoba put up a scrappy run. In the final seconds of this game, I was defending against John, and in a clutch moment, he made an almost impossible shot. I fouled John and he confidently drained his free throws, which ultimately helped his team win the title. John was a gentleman and a fierce competitor. He was someone who exuded a warm and caring heart, and he became a mentor to many. We became great friends over the years. When John eventually moved to Vancouver to be with his fiancé, Janet, he became my roommate for a short period of time. I was honoured to be John’s best man at his wedding. I watched him become a loving husband and devoted father. Of course, I was thrilled when John joined our Vancouver Cable Cars wheelchair basketball team. Over the years, John suffered immensely from losing his leg to cancer, which was the same cancer that claimed Terry’s life. He persisted through significant phantom pains and other challenges, yet he always exhibited determination, resiliency and optimism. Long past our basketball playing days, John was always the first to organize a team reunion, and he made every effort to help us stay connected. I extend my deepest condolences to John’s wife Janet, his children, family and close friends. I hope they will be lifted by memories of their precious moments with John. From life’s most significant challenges comes the reminder to take nothing for granted, and to reach out to the ones you love and care for. Do what John would do, be kind, and have no regrets. I miss you dear friend. Rest well. - RH #InMemoriam #friendship #inmemory

Dear Friend! The Alberta Northern Lights Wheelchair Basketball Society would like you to consider giving a donation to support our society objectives. Your generous gift will make a positive impact on our players and our wheelchair basketball community. We want to share a success story with you:... Llewellyn Daley is a retired Sergeant from the British Army who served 20 years with the Royal Artillery and Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers. His service included deployment to several conflict inflicted countries, including Cyprus, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. Because of many years of training exercise in Suffield, AB he developed a fondness for Canada where he met and lives with his wife, Sandra. His career came to an early medical discharge in 2019 due to an ankle injury, and he found himself unable to participate in many of his usual physical training. Throughout his Army career, Llewellyn had played at a competitive national and international level, eventually leading him to be head coach for the British Army Basketball and UK Combined Services Basketball teams. Faced with no longer being physically able to play basketball because of his ankle, Llewellyn began searching for an alternative. At the encouragement from his wife, Llewellyn contacted the Alberta Northern Lights Wheelchair Basketball Society in March 2020, where he was readily welcomed. Having the comradery of this club has provided Llewellyn with an important sense of community and belonging as he navigates his resettlement into civilian life. The transition out of military service is not always easy, and facing physical limitations often adds to the stress of this adjustment. Having access to inclusive sports has been a major boost to his morale, as it is for so many others involved in this sport. Here are a few other examples of the programs and equipment that are made possible in part by your generosity: - Programming for the Mini-Lights ages 4-13 - Programming for our advanced "A" team - Support of the Hi-Lights School Program - Purchasing of specialized sport wheelchairs - Replacement parts for chairs and wheels - Court rental costs - Travel expenses for future out of town tournaments The Alberta Northern Lights Wheelchair Basketball Society is dedicated to the promotion of an inclusive society through the provision of learning, participatory and competitive opportunities for people of all abilities in wheelchair basketball. This is made possible with the support of our generous donors. We can’t run these invaluable programs without your help! If you would like to contribute to our programs, please visit us online at albertanorthernlights.com, send a cheque payable to Alberta Northern Lights Wheelchair Basketball Society, e-transfer to [email protected] or contact us for more information. Thank you! Sincerely, Kyle Allen, President Alberta Northern Lights Wheelchair Basketball Society
