So, what have you been doing with your horses this fall? With a brief break in the cold weather (at least in Alberta), has anyone had a chance to get out with their horses? For work or play?

Last weekend, we did something we've talked about for a LONG time, even planned it a few times but it always fell through - logging! A fellow teamster was doing a bit of cleaning up to open some space for his horses. So we went in to clear some deadfall and some other trees. And let's just say we won't need firewood for a while. Most of us went old school (just walking behind our horses) but Dana and Paul used their forecart. You be the judge who was smarter...

We just wanted to close the loop (pardon the pun) on our wheel building posts... So here is Terry finishing the process - the wire has gone through the rubber tire and has been braised closed. Now he just has to close the rubber chasm by skidding it (his cardiovascular workout...). We did it in a 3 video series and we think they're all pretty interesting.

We think our Driving Clinic was a huge success yesterday. We had fun, the weather was a typical Alberta (changed every 5 minutes) day and the horses got worked. Hopefully, the students will agree it was a day well spent. We start out with ground-driving (both people AND horses) and then move up to single and the finale is driving teams of 2. A huge thanks to Alexis, Cheri, Chris, Deana, Les, Tanilla and Velvet for being willing and open to learning and testing your skills!

Happy Friday! We just wanted to remind people that the registration for our Basic Driving Clinic is only open for a few more days. There are limited spots left, so please contact Terry today. When: Saturday, Sept 26... Where: The Alberta Carriage Supply shop (please see map on our Home Page for location). What time: Doors open at 8 a.m. The clinic starts at 9 a.m. and finishes at 4 p.m. This is a basic driving clinic, giving you hands-on experience in how to safely harness and drive your horse (or horses) so both of you are safe and comfortable. The price of $195 +GST includes instruction on: - How to harness and hook up singles and teams - How to drive singles and teams - Principles on driving safety - How to hook to carriage and wagon Snacks will be provided. Lunch will be served to reduce COVID risk. What COVID precautions will be used? Some of the training will be in the barn at the beginning of the day, but most of the work will be done outside. So we'll have lots of separation between our students. You will also be with your cohort (groups or families are highly encouraged!) so you'll be sharing horses and harness. Sanitizer will also be available throughout the day. It's going to be a great day, we hope to see you there!

We saw there might be a bit of confusion around the difference between pneumatic tires and wood spoked wheels. So here is a bit explanation around the two. There are times and specific driving situations when wood spokes are better than pneumatic: * Aesthetically, if you like the authentic look of the wood spoked wheel * If you do a lot of river crossings (as with trail or mountain rides), the water flows through them more freely, making your crossing safer... However, the cons of wood spokes are: * They are very expensive a $1200 upgrade - if you’re only considering the look of the tires and not the kind of driving you’re doing * They are more labour intensive should the need arise for repainting, etc. * Because we run our larger wagon in the winter, we need the sleigh runner option, which isn’t available with wood-spoked wheels * Rubber is a better option in some cases because the pneumatic tires absorb more road shock. The wood spoke wheel option for our particular wagon (the red wagon in our profile picture) is 30" in diameter. This small a diameter, with wood-spoked wheels, would make for a very uncomfortable ride over rough ground And we want people to be happy with their horse driving experience and looking at our beautiful scenery - not focused on how bumpy the ride is. So, in our case, rubber is definitely the way to go! What kind of driving do you do? Are you wood-spoked or rubber?
