Reminder: Nominations for Canadian Medical Association President are due this Thursday, November 26! Even though most health care policy affecting us is at a provincial level, national advocacy has always been important. In the coming years, there are several federal health issues that will need strong physician leadership and advocacy. - plans for a national pharmacare program; ... - addressing the social determinants of health in our First Nations communities; - controlling rising drug costs; - securing a stable medication supply; - improving the health of seniors including addressing conditions in long term care; and - addressing the variability in the pandemic response by the provinces and distribution of a potential COVID-19 vaccine. Alberta physicians require a strong voice both provincially and nationally, and if Alberta’s nominee is ratified, that physician will become CMA president in August 2022. Dear Members: We have heard from many physicians since our October 2 President’s Letter about government’s decision to terminate grant funding for the AMA’s Alternative Relationship Plan Physician Support Services (ARP PSS) program. A variety of things have been underway to determine how the AMA can best assist members in both the short and long term. It is not only with respect to cARPs that the environment is shifting. We are moving into a world of significant change for al...ternative payment arrangements in general. This includes AHS payment arrangements, and potential new contractual models arising out of Bill 30. We will all need to learn about the implications, risks and opportunities. As a result, the AMA will be undertaking a project over the next few months to help us determine the optimal resourcing, structure and methods for representing and supporting physicians in all non-fee-for-service payment arrangements. This project will be future-focused and will involve extensive input from member physicians. Whether in cARP or the Academic Medicine Health Services Plan, members are entitled to representation and we are here for you. Parachute Canada, a national charity dedicated to injury prevention and the Injury Prevention Centre, University of Alberta, has released a new joint report, the "Evidence Summary on the Prevention of Poisoning in Canada". View the full report: https://parachute.ca//Evidence-Summary-on-Poisoning-in-Can Some key findings include:... - Approximately 4,000 Canadians die each year due to poisoning. - Unintentional poisoning deaths have now surpassed transport-related deaths in Canada. In 2017, there were more than twice as many fatalities due to unintentional poisonings compared to transport-related injuries. - Hospitalizations due to opioid poisonings increased by 27% from 2013 to 2017, with an estimate of 17 opioid-poisoning hospitalizations each day in Canada. - Males in mid-adulthood are the major population at risk for opioid-related poisonings. Nearly half of all opioid-related poisoning deaths in Canada are among those aged 30 to 49, and three-quarters are among males.

Dear Members: About 1,300 physicians registered for an AMA webinar last Friday entitled: Living with the Sunshine List. Government has said it will release the list on or before November 9. A recording of the webinar is available on the AMA website (member login required). Below is some key content for those who may not find time to watch in the next few days. Alberta physicians provide excellent value. Taxpayers have a right to know where their dollars go. We don’t mind peop...le knowing how much we bill the health care system, but we don’t want Albertans to think we earn more than we do. As you are well aware, gross payment data is grossly misleading. We have already released the document Context Matters (https://www.albertadoctors.org//context-matters-facts-phys) that explains the factors that go into the numbers that the public will see (e.g., overhead, hours of work, extra training/shorter career length, economic contributions as employers, etc.). The AMA sought legal counsel when the payment disclosure legislation relating to physician payments was passed in 2015. The advice we received is that it is in government’s purview to release this information and that there is precedent in a number of other provinces. If the objective is transparency, then information on the range of payments by specialty (from the lowest to the highest) is already publicly available in the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan statistical supplement (https://open.alberta.ca/publications/0845-4775). We feel that publishing the names of individual physicians is unnecessary for transparency and merely crosses the line into curiosity. About the exemption process: There are physicians who will be facing significant security concerns when the gross payment information is made public. There is an exemption process and physicians were given three weeks to apply for an exemption for November’s release. The bar is set very high for approval...
