Strawberry Spinach (Blitum capitatum) is an native annual that is a frost tolerant edible. The leaves and fleshy fruits are edible. Very tasty as a mixed salad green. We currently have seeds in stock for those interested in growing this vegetable next spring #wildedibles #albertanativeplants #alclanativeplants

Very excited about this upcoming workshop at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery. If you are in the Lethbridge area we'd love to see you there!
Red Paintbrush or Castilleja miniata is a hemi-parasitic plant in the Orobanchaceae family. These plants directly parasitize other plants by means of specialized root structures called haustoria. We have been trialing different native host grasses, Blue Grama Grass is so far by far our favourite. Very elegant and complimentary.
Join us Thursday, March 11th, we will be offering a free online talk from noon to 1pm with the Alberta Native Plant Council about Growing Native Plants. You can sign up through this link: https://register.gotowebinar.com/regist/9188709244432778507

Hey plant lovers, it is already February! Many native species have adapted to our long cold winters by not germinating until after the seeds have gone through an extended cold period. For many plants this averages around 2 to 3 months. Artificially replicating this process is called cold stratification. You can sow seeds in moist sand in your refrigerator, or you can plant them directly outside. Either way, you should be starting soon if you are hoping to get your plants to germinate by May. Columbines are one of our featured native species this year that require cold, moist, stratification and we are offering a fun seed mix with a blend of Red, Blue, and Yellow Columbines. You can purchase seeds directly by clicking on the link below.

Now that gardens here in Alberta are asleep for the coming winter, us gardeners are starting to dream of what we will grow next spring. At ALCLA Native Plants we are busy with seeds: selling, cleaning, and inventorying. We have already put some seeds into stratification and will continue on with that through the winter. Along this vein I wanted to share a video that our co-owner Latifa Pelletier-Ahmed did in conjunction with the Calgary Horticultural Society on Starting Nat...ive Plants from Seed. Please follow this video link to view: https://www.youtube.com/watch #seeds #nativeplants #sourceidentifiedseed #alclanativeplants
The next class we are presenting with Calgary Horticultural Society is Botany for Gardeners. This will be an online presentation. For more information please visit: https://www.calhort.org/whats-happening/

Autumn Seed Mixes are now available! Did you know that seeds that require cold stratification can be planted in the fall for spring germination? This year's fall mix contains: Blazing Star, Shooting Star, Showy Milkweed, Wild Hollyhock and Wild Chives We recommend 1 packet for every 1-2 square feet.
Alberta Parks are in Danger "Alberta Parks need your voice, now more than ever. In March, the Government of Alberta announced the removal of 164 parks and the closure of 20 campsites and day-use areas, impacting a total of 175 parks and provincial recreation areas. CPAWS Northern and Southern Alberta chapters have been pushing for this decision to be reversed, but protecting Alberta’s parks is not possible without you!" https://cpaws-southernalberta.org/par/defend-alberta-parks/
