Congratulations to Matej Pederson on earning the Alberta 2020 Junior Short Track Male Skater of the Year award! Last season included some serious challenges for Matej, but this resilient athlete recalls some great moments too, including racing in front of a home crowd at the junior trials in Calgary last December. This 2019 Canadian Junior Champion competed in 4 international meets last season, gaining important experience and a couple of relay medals with teammates. Althoug...h Matej is disappointed to not have an opportunity to compete for a spot to his 3rd World Juniors (the and World Jr Championships have been cancelled this season), he is thankful for and taking full advantage of focussed training time to hone his racing skills during this isolation period while also continuing to develop his music knowledge and skills! Congratulations again and best of luck ahead, Matej! @matejpederson #matejpederson #speedskating #shorttrackspeedskating #lovetorace #risinglikeaphoenix #upagain #fasterforward @goteamab AASSA @ssc_pvc @theolympicoval @baraldi.photographie
Here is a short video of Hee-Won Son regarding her Alberta Speed Skating 2020 Female Open Short Track and Female Junior Long Track Skater of the Year awards. Congratulations Hee-Won!
Alberta Speed Skating is pleased to announce that Annika Johnston is the 2020 Junior Short Track Female Skater of the Year! Congratulations Annika! 2019-2020 was an inaugural and break-through season at the national level for this young junior athlete, including earning a coveted and limited spot at the Canadian Junior Championships where she gained tremendous racing experience with the best in Canada. Annika also had strong results at National Qualifiers and one of the hig...hlights of the season was being at the top of the podium on the Olympic Oval Skate-Tec Western Elite Circuit. Annika finished the 2019-2020 season ranked #2 in Western Canada between teammate and recently appointed Dev Team member, Wren Acorn, and CWG medallist Victoria Goplen who are some of Annika’s valuable Olympic Oval training mates. While things are currently not typical or ideal, Annika is still enjoying being part of the adapted Oval program when she isn’t keeping up with her high school studies, friends and other activities! Well done, and keep smiling through this challenging time, Annika! There will be more racing fun ahead soon. @annikajohnston_ #annikajohnston #speedskating #shorttrackskating #youngtalent #celebration #awardwinning #havingfun #girlswhoskatefast #lovetorace AASSA, @theolympicoval, Cristina Lazarescu and Sondra Goplen
Alberta Speed Skating is pleased to announce Hee-Won Son as the 2020 Alberta Female Open Short Track AND the 2020 Alberta Female Junior Long Track Skater of the Year! Congratulations Hee-Won! Earning a Short Track World Juniors team spot and a ST gold medal at the @2019canadagames in the 2018-2019 season, Hee-Won was still recovering from surgery and rehabilitation going into the 2019-2020 season and yet it was a great season for her nonetheless! Hee-Won continued to ...train and compete in both disciplines, but was focussed on LT after earning her second World Juniors Team spot this time in LT, with amazing Jr World Cup and Jr World Championships experiences before the pandemic arrived in full force. Hee-Won is a busy athlete and student but finds time to share her experience too. We were pleased to have Hee-Won share her at-home approaches with younger athletes via the Alberta Virtual Dryland training this summer. Well done and good luck ahead, Hee-Won! Check out the great photos and a video of Hee-Won as part of this post! #celebrating #speedskating #achievements #shorttrackspeedskating @goteamab #heewonson @heewonson_ AASSA @theolympicoval @ssc
